The GLOBE Academy is a K-8 public charter school on two campuses that opened in 2013, serving students from across DeKalb County, Georgia (metropolitan Atlanta). With a focus on dual-language immersion, an experiential-learning model, and a constructivist approach, GLOBE inspires students to be high-performing lifelong learners equipped to make a positive impact in the world. Essential Functions The Head Custodian is a working supervisor responsible for leading the daily custodial and general facilities operations of an assigned GLOBE campus. The Head Custodian ensures that school facilities are clean, safe, functional, secure, welcoming, and operationally ready for students, employees, families, and visitors. This position performs hands-on custodial and general facilities maintenance duties while supervising custodial employees, conducting building inspections, managing supplies and equipment, coordinating work orders, supporting school events, and anticipating campus operational needs. The Head Custodian is expected to take ownership of campus conditions, proactively identify needs, assign and prioritize work, and ensure that identified issues are appropriately resolved or escalated. Head Custodian Responsibilities
- Lead, direct, and supervise assigned custodial employees.
- Develop and maintain daily, weekly, and periodic custodial assignments and schedules.
- Adjust staffing assignments based on attendance, events, building conditions, and changing campus needs.
- Redistribute work when employees are absent to ensure essential responsibilities are completed.
- Train employees in cleaning procedures, equipment use, chemical safety, general maintenance tasks, security procedures, and campus expectations.
- Monitor employee performance and provide timely feedback, coaching, and retraining when necessary.
- Inspect completed work and ensure established cleanliness and facilities standards are consistently met.
- Review employee time and attendance according to GLOBE procedures.
- Promote teamwork while maintaining individual accountability.
- Communicate significant performance, staffing, or operational concerns to the Director of Facilities, Safety & Transportation. Custodial Responsibilities
- Perform and oversee cleaning of classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, dining areas, multipurpose spaces, common areas, and other campus facilities.
- Perform floor care, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and other periodic floor maintenance.
- Ensure daily trash and recycling removal and proper cleaning of waste receptacles.
- Ensure restrooms remain clean, functional, sanitized, and properly stocked throughout the school day.
- Respond promptly to spills, clogged drains, restroom issues, and other emergency cleaning needs.
- Perform and coordinate periodic deep-cleaning projects.
- Provide hands-on custodial coverage when staffing needs require it.
- Conduct regular walkthroughs of interior and exterior campus areas to verify cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness.
- Identify deficiencies and assign or complete corrective work.
- Follow up on identified issues to ensure appropriate resolution.
Responsibilities include:
- Hang and securely install artwork, bulletin boards, whiteboards, signage, shelving, wall-mounted accessories, and other school materials.
- Assemble, repair, relocate, and adjust classroom and office furniture, shelving, storage units, and other equipment.
- Perform interior touch-up painting and minor painting projects, including basic wall preparation, patching, and finishing.
- Complete light carpentry, including minor repairs to doors, trim, shelving, cabinets, furniture, and similar building components.
- Perform minor plumbing-related tasks within the scope of training and authorization, including addressing simple clogs, replacing basic fixtures or components, and identifying leaks or other plumbing concerns.
- Maintain a basic working knowledge of building electrical systems sufficient to recognize potential concerns, assist with basic troubleshooting, and safely perform authorized, non-specialized tasks.
- Replace light bulbs, filters, and other basic, non-specialized building components when trained and authorized.
- Safely use common hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other equipment appropriate to assigned tasks.
- Perform and coordinate preventative maintenance activities.
- Assist with room resets, furniture installations, campus improvement projects, and other facilities-related projects.
- Monitor visible conditions of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, locks, fixtures, flooring, walls, ceilings, and other building components.
- Assign appropriate minor maintenance tasks to custodial staff based on employee training and ability.
- Inspect completed maintenance work for quality and safety.
- Identify repairs requiring a specialized contractor, licensed professional, or work outside the scope of the custodial team and promptly report them to the Director of Facilities, Safety & Transportation. Work Orders, Inspections & Campus Readiness
- Conduct routine interior and exterior building inspections to identify custodial, maintenance, safety, and operational needs.
- Create, monitor, prioritize, and follow up on facility work orders and maintenance requests.
- Prioritize work based on safety, urgency, impact on school operations, and available resources.
- Follow up on outstanding repairs to help ensure facility concerns are resolved.
- Identify recurring facility problems and recommend preventative or corrective action.
- Review the school calendar and anticipate upcoming custodial, maintenance, event, and facility needs.
- Plan deep-cleaning, preventative maintenance, and special projects around school breaks, teacher workdays, and other periods of reduced building use.
- Communicate unresolved or significant facility concerns to the Director of Facilities, Safety & Transportation. Supplies & Equipment
- Monitor custodial and basic maintenance inventory and anticipate supply needs.
- Maintain appropriate levels of cleaning products, paper products, trash liners, PPE, filters, basic hardware, and other routinely used supplies.
- Submit purchasing requests before shortages occur.
- Receive, organize, secure, and distribute supplies and materials.
- Monitor supply usage and reduce unnecessary waste.
- Ensure custodial and maintenance equipment is properly maintained and safely operated.
- Secure and protect tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Remove unsafe or malfunctioning equipment from service and coordinate repair or replacement.
- Maintain clean, organized, secure, and appropriately stocked custodial and maintenance storage areas. Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
- Monitor campus exterior conditions and cleanliness.
- Keep entrances, sidewalks, walkways, play-adjacent areas, and other assigned exterior spaces clean and free of litter and debris.
- Perform or coordinate routine groundskeeping responsibilities assigned to the custodial team.
- Monitor and service exterior trash receptacles.
- Identify exterior maintenance and safety hazards and address or report them appropriately.
- Assist with weather-related preparation and cleanup.
- Coordinate with the Director of Facilities, Safety & Transportation when grounds or exterior work exceeds the scope of the custodial team. Events & Campus Operations
- Coordinate room setup and breakdown for assemblies, meetings, performances, athletic events, professional learning, parent activities, and other school events.
- Anticipate custodial and facilities needs for upcoming events.
- Ensure adequate restroom and trash service during events.
- Coordinate post-event cleaning and ensure spaces are restored for school use.
- Assist with deliveries, shipping and receiving, furniture and equipment movement, and campus moves.
- Support contractors and vendors by providing appropriate access to campus spaces when directed.
- Support campus opening and closing procedures.
- Provide after-hours or weekend facilities support when scheduled or directed.
- Respond to urgent facility and operational needs that could affect school readiness or safety. Safety, Security & Emergency Readiness
- Ensure proper handling, storage, dilution, labeling, and disposal of cleaning chemicals.
- Ensure Safety Data Sheets are accessible and appropriate PPE is available and used.
- Ensure employees are appropriately trained before using chemicals, tools, or equipment.
- Keep chemicals, tools, and equipment secured and inaccessible to students.
- Monitor safe operation of commercial custodial equipment, hand tools, power tools, and ladders.
- Follow and enforce established campus opening and closing procedures.
- Ensure keys and access credentials are appropriately controlled.
- Monitor doors, windows, gates, locks, lighting, and other building security conditions.
- Report damaged locks, doors, windows, alarms, or other security concerns.
- Ensure custodial employees understand their assigned responsibilities during fire alarms, severe weather, evacuations, lockdowns, and other emergency situations.
- Provide facilities support during emergencies as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of commercial cleaning practices, sanitation procedures, and custodial operations.
- Knowledge of cleaning products, chemical safety, PPE, and workplace safety practices.
- Working knowledge of commercial custodial and floor-care equipment.
- Basic working knowledge of general building maintenance, including painting, light carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, furniture repair, and minor facility repairs.
- Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to identify when a repair requires a specialized contractor or licensed professional.
- Ability to lead, train, supervise, and hold employees accountable for assigned responsibilities.
- Ability to develop schedules, prioritize work, and adjust assignments based on changing operational needs.
- Ability to inspect work objectively and ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Ability to anticipate facility, custodial, inventory, and event needs.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond appropriately to urgent situations.

- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of custodial, facilities, janitorial, building maintenance, or related experience.
- Experience leading, training, coordinating, or supervising others.
- Experience using commercial custodial and floor-care equipment.
- Experience with basic hand tools and general facilities maintenance tasks.
- Ability to perform authorized minor maintenance and repairs and recognize when professional service is required.
- Effective verbal, written, and basic technology communication skills.
- Demonstrated reliability, initiative, organization, judgment, and problem-solving ability.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three or more years of progressively responsible custodial, facilities, or building maintenance experience.
- Previous lead or supervisory custodial experience.
- Experience working in a K-12 school environment.
- Experience with staff scheduling, building inspections, work orders, preventative maintenance, inventory, and purchasing.
- Experience performing basic painting, carpentry, plumbing, furniture repair/assembly, and other general facilities maintenance.
- Relevant training in custodial operations, workplace safety, floor care, general maintenance, or facilities management.
