JOB SUMMARY
The job of Custodian has the responsibility of performing a variety of custodial services related to providing a clean, safe and attractive educational environment. Serves in a staff capacity to the building director and line capacity to the business manager. Inspects and maintains building and grounds; opens building for educational and activity uses; cleans assigned rooms, corridors and restrooms; cleans laundry; assists food service program; inspects and repairs district mechanical, electric and plumbing installations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Keeps buildings and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times. Keeps school grounds looking attractive and in safe condition. Reports damage to school property to the building director. Regularly reviews and observes the school grounds and building to find areas in need of maintenance. Performs corrective mechanical, plumbing and/or electrical maintenance upon district owned property and equipment if capable or refers need of repair to building director. Performs general repair, cleaning and maintenance of the building and grounds during the summer months. Cleans, sweeps, vacuums and dusts assigned classrooms including the boards, sinks and furniture found therein. Washes windows as needed. Daily cleans corridors and restrooms as assigned by the building director. Assumes responsibility for opening the building doors and ensures that all panic bolts are working properly. Determines nightly that all doors and windows are secured. Ensures that all lights are off except those used for security purposes. Moves furniture and equipment within the building and grounds as may be needed. Prepares for school activities as directed or assigned by the building director. Abides by all state, federal and district regulations pertaining to the proper execution of custodial duties and operations. Assists in the cleaning of the lunch room and the disposal of trash from the food services program. Fills milk coolers. Inspects all fire alarm, heating, plumbing and electrical installations to ensure proper operation. Cleans and dries school laundry as assigned by the building director. Under the direction of the building director, conducts other items of business as may be required to efficiently maintain the building and grounds of the school district.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED 18 years of age or older Meeting requirements for trainings/screenings and professional learnings set by the district and State of Iowa Working knowledge of city and school locations Utilize computers to read district/office communications and to take required online training courses
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position will require physical demands that include constant standing, walking, bending/stooping, and climbing.

There will be frequent, reaching/pushing/pulling, extreme temperatures/humidity conditions, inside/outside work conditions, and lifting of up to 25 pounds. There will be occasional, carrying of 10 feet, and lifting of 25-75 pounds and 50-75 pounds, and sitting. In emergencies there may be a need to lift 75-100 pounds
