A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Ensure are school facilities are clean and well maintained. Promote positive relationships with staff, students, supervisors and community members. Communicate to Head Custodian or Maintenance/Custodial Manager any changes or concerns regarding job assignments. Perform cleaning functions such as trash removal, sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and restocking supplies. Adhere to established West Des Moines Community School District policies, procedures, and guidelines. Maintain custodial storage area inventory and organize. Custodial storage areas must be secured and locked throughout work shift. Monitor and ensure facility security through keeping doors and windows shut and locked when appropriate. Return all custodial tools and supplies to a secure custodial storage area at the end of each shift. Assist in assigned project work, including refinishing floors and cleaning carpet. Respond to requests, which may include setting up/tearing down rooms for meetings or class functions, or athletic events moving furniture/equipment and storing deliveries. Perform minor maintenance tasks. Complete snow removal and lawn care duties as required. Promptly report all safety hazards to Head Custodian or Maintenance/Custodial Manager. Participate actively in all professional development and safety training. Maintain a reliable attendance record. Complete all trainings as required. Perform other duties as assigned.
