A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

This role involves ensuring the application of appropriate cleaning methods and protocols to maintain cleanliness in offices, common areas, classrooms, labs, and various other spaces. Responsibilities include executing discretionary tasks and addressing requests, such as hanging pictures, fixing office furniture, arranging tables and chairs for events, and handling minor repairs and painting.

Office, Meeting Rooms, and Restroom Maintenance Dust and clean exposed desks, chairs, tables, filing cabinets, bookcases, shelves, offices, lobbies, corridors, conference rooms, bathrooms, and other designated areas, including lab spaces. Replenish paper supplies in restrooms and other rooms as needed. Manage inventory of cleaning and paper supplies. Vacuum, shampoo carpets, and mop as assigned. Prepare room setups for meetings and other school functions. Check classrooms for proper room setup and make resets if necessary. Cleaning Cleans and sanitizes walls, fixtures, partitions, glass, mirrors, and refill dispensers daily or as requested. Trash and Recycling Removal Empties trash & recycling, replaces container liners, remove trash & recycling to proper dumpster for disposal, performs other assignments as requested by supervisor. General Maintenance Install and/or hang items as requested Perform minor repairs and modifications to office furniture Conduct minor repairs on walls and prepare wall surfaces for paint Undertake other discretionary, project, or maintenance-related tasks as assigned.
Work Environment:
Hours for this position are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Move up to 20 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation. Access cleaning spaces with or without reasonable accommodation. This position requires the use of cleaning chemicals. Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed. Work overtime as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Work Experience :
Housekeeping or custodial experience. Knowledge of the materials, methods, and the practices used in housekeeping operations. Knowledge of the operation, use and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.

Experience in the maintenance or construction fields Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings Advanced training in custodial and high-volume cleaning operations Experience interacting with customers and/or the public

Hourly Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
