A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Organizational Scope:

Reporting directly to the Director of Facilities and supporting the school and Building Principal. The Building Custodian is assigned to perform routine manual cleaning and maintaining the building.

Position Responsibilities:

Scrubs, dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, waxes, polishes floors, rooms, hallways and closets Dusts and arranges furniture Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens, and classroom facilities Empties wastebaskets and other trash receptacles Locks and unlocks doors Sorts and stores materials for recycling programs Reports to Facilities Director and Principal on damage and/or needed repairs Picks up paper and other trash in buildings and/or on school grounds Checks heating and air conditioning equipment to ensure proper working order and reports any failures to Principal or Facilities Director Working directly with outside rental groups Performs minor repairs under direction of Facilities Director and/or Principal Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications & Physical Demands:

Must have custodial experience and have some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment. Experience with the use of small equipment used in routine cleaning. Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy. Must be able to walk and stand on tile flooring for up to 1-2 miles per day, lift up to 50 pounds, move furniture, bend and twist regularly at the waist, knees and neck.

Physical Demands:

The physical requirements of this role involves the ability to stand, bend, kneel, walk and clean a school buidling for extended periods on hard surfaces. The role require the ability to lift or moving items up to 50 pounds. Work is performed in a school building and involves physical activity. The environment includes regular interaction with students and staff, varying room temperatures, background noise, and frequent transitions or interruptions common in school settings. The position also requires the ability to use a computer and standard office equipment to support instruction and communication. Salary in accordance with the Unit C Salary Scale https://www.nrsd.net/page/nrsd-contracts , compensation is based on experience and qualifications . Candidate review begins immediately.

Terms of Employment, Evaluation of Performance, and Salary:

The Building Custodian is a Nashoba Regional School District Unit C position. Terms of employment, including evaluation and salary, are covered by the provisions of the Unit C collective bargaining agreement currently in effect.
