A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform the regular duties of a building custodian in a school or the public building and perform related work as required.

Performing duties requiring knowledge, skills and abilities, and personal characteristics such as the following: Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used and the safety precautions to be taken in performing custodial work, including the knowledge of and proper use of the custodial supplies (synthetic soaps, scouring powders, floor finishes, etc.) and the proper techniques in using them on various kinds of floors, walls, toilet-rooms, equipment, furniture and other building furnishings and equipment Knowledge of the use, operation and care of custodial equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor machines, auto-scrubbers, floor brushes, mops, etc.) Knowledge of the care of buildings and grounds, walks, lawns, shrubbery, etc. and knowledge of the operation and care in the use of hand tools and the knowledge of minor adjustment and repair of furniture and other building equipment, including plumbing, heating and electrical fixtures Knowledge of fires and accident prevention in public buildings, including the operation and care of various kinds of fire extinguishers Knowledge of the proper display of the flag of the United States of America Ability to follow written instructions Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships Physical fitness to perform a variety of manual tasks Neat appearance, and of good moral character. Also responsible for the specific areas as listed in the applicable territory, and in the description of duties for building custodian.

The salary and terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Custodian Association contract. Position filled according to Civil Service rules and regulations.

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation. This position subject to funding.
