POSITION
Head Custodian - WTHS This is a working, supervisory, custodial position. An employee in this class, with technical supervision from the Maintenance and Operations Manager and administrative supervision from the school principal/assistant principal, is responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the assigned facility. The head custodian exercises general supervision over assigned custodians. Employees in this position are responsible for building inspections five days per week as well as weekends and holidays. Weekend and holiday inspections may be rotated among staff members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE
Plans, assigns and supervised the work of the custodians in cleaning and maintaining the school plant. Periodically inspects assigned areas and tasks to ensure that work is performed in accordance with established standards. Trains newly-assigned personnel. Maintains necessary records, prepares reports and requisitions, and receives supplies. Issues cleaning materials and maintains a supply reserve. Cleans and performs preventative maintenance on grounds, maintenance equipment, and other mechanical equipment as directed. Notifies the principal of necessary repairs that are beyond the scope of custodial personnel assigned and issues work orders as appropriate via maintenance software. Performs such janitorial duties as dusting, washing windows, doors, walls and woodwork; sweeping, dry and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and buffing floors; and vacuuming and shampooing carpets. Cleans restrooms and locker room and collects refuse in all areas. Climbs ladders to clean light fixtures and change light bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Assists in the unloading of instructional and custodial supplies and food items. Removes snow and ice from sidewalks. Trims shrubbery and cuts grass with both riding and push mowers. Opens and secures building and checks for vandalism. Monitors heating and cooling equipment. Responsible for weekend and holiday building checks. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal.
QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment. Working knowledge of heating systems and principles of electricity and mechanics. Sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand operating manuals for boilers and warning instructions on cleaning items to be used. Ability to climb an extension ladder. Ability to read simple instructions and write messages. Ability to work with adults and children of various backgrounds. Ability to work outside under adverse weather Freedom from any physical impediment to operate the buffing, scrubbing, or grass cutting machines; to stand for prolonged periods of time; and to hear the normally spoken word at 25 feet. Ability to communicate orally in an understandable fashion. Willingness to acquire skills in operation of buffing, scrubbing, and other cleaning machines used in assigned facility. Ability to lift 100 pounds. Ability (with corrected vision if necessary) to read small print at arm's length. A high school diploma or GED is required. Minimum of two years custodial experience. Working knowledge of computer and associated software. Able to prepare written reports.
DUTY YEAR AND SALARY
This is a 12-month position. Salary is based on direct custodial experience paid from the Head Custodian Salary Scale.
