JOB ANALYSIS

The Custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building, grounds and physical plant, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the school custodian provides direct support to classrooms teachers in set up. The Custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(The following are illustrative of the responsibilities associated with this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.)

Maintains assigned sectors of a school building(s) and grounds in a clean, orderly and safe condition, following established standards. This shall include, but not be limited to, the following: sweeping, mopping, buffing, scrubbing and refinishing floors; washing windows, glass partitions and mirrors; vacuuming and spot cleaning carpeting; cleaning drinking fountains, sinks and toilets; pickup and disposal of rubbish; changing light bulbs/tubes; cleaning cafeteria tables & chairs; cleanup of spills; dusting; raking & other grounds work in the vicinity of the building (policing the area of debris and raking woodchips back into place in the playground fall zones). Also includes responding to urgent/critical cleaning/maintenance needs. Performs painting to walls, railings, playgrounds and other areas of the schools.

Assures safety during inclement weather, including shoveling, use of a snowblower, applying salt & sand, providing snow removal from roofs and removing debris from roof drains & downspouts as needed.

Follows all safety rules & regulations, industry-standard practices and federal/state/city school district policies, as outlined in the LSD Facility Maintenance Plan or provided during training.

Knowledge of lockdown procedures, fire drills, emergency backpacks to ensure a safe school environment. Ensures security of school buildings and property through proper use of alarm systems and entrances.

Maintains assigned custodial storage and workspaces in a secure, neat and orderly condition. Properly maintains all cleaning equipment.

Applies cleaning chemicals according to established procedures.

Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.

Helps set up/clean up after and during lunches. Responds to spills as necessary.

Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff.

Aids in school event setups.

Notifies supervisor of building discrepancies (items requiring repair) identified during shift. This also includes improperly operating equipment and supply shortages.

Performs other duties as assigned related to the primary scope of this position description.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all District employees, vendors, contactors, and public entities.

Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.

Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential.
