Job Description

Churchill County takes pride in the condition of its facilities. We are looking for someone to work for us who thinks appearances are important, too. We are currently recruiting for a full-time Custodian to help care for various county buildings, ensuring they remain orderly and presentable. The ideal candidate will have experience in custodial work, take pride in performing thorough, high-quality work, and be able to complete tasks efficiently. This role requires an early start, with working hours from 4:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Applications will be accepted until June 28, 2026, at 11:59 pm. As a full-time, regular position, the person hired would be enrolled in the Nevada PERS retirement system. In addition to the salary paid, the county contributes an additional 36.75% into PERS on the employee's behalf (value of $6.22/hour or $12,900 annually). In addition, the employee will not contribute to Social Security, resulting in an additional 6% in take-home pay (an equivalent of $1.00/hour or $2,080 annually). The county also pays 100% for employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $ 5.82 /hour or $12,800 annually). An employee in this position will also receive full accruals of vacation leave (8 hours per month) and sick leave (10 hours per month), in addition to 8 hours for pay for 12 paid holidays. This position is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Position Summary:
Responsible for performing standard custodial and cleaning duties in County buildings, facilities and adjacent grounds; interacts with and provides standard information to the public. This job description indicates, in general, the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, abilities and other essential functions (as covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act) expected of the incumbent. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the incumbent. Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required. Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps, vacuums and spot cleans carpeted areas. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; dusts counters, window sills, window blinds and similar fixtures. Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash. Washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, window blinds and furniture; polishes metalwork. Cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies as necessary. Cleans lighting fixtures and reports the need for bulb or tube replacement. Strips, seals and buffs floors. Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks doors to secure buildings. Reports the need for maintenance or repair of facilities to the appropriate supervisor; corrects or reports any fire or safety hazards and places barriers in public areas. Maintains equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition. Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition. Follows label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents to ensure proper strength for use. Answers questions and provides standard information to the public if working in a public facility. Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc. May set up meeting rooms and rearrange furniture; may drive a County motor vehicle to specified work sites. May oversee the work of community service workers when assigned. Monitors visitors during facility hours of operation to ensure orderly conduct; reports unsafe conditions; opens and closes facility as required. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and Experience High School Diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of custodial/janitorial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of:
Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment. Use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work. Safety practices and equipment related to the work. Basic shop mathematics. Basic record keeping practices. Basic techniques for dealing with the public. Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
Skill in:
Safely using hand tools and power equipment related to the work. Understanding and following written and oral instructions. Working without close supervision in standard work situations. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work. Maintaining accurate records of work performed. Required Certificates, Licenses and Registrations Nevada Driver's License. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Mobility to work in a typical shop or related maintenance setting, including operating typical trade equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone. Work is subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors. Conditions of Employment Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. New employees are required to submit to a background investigation and if hired for a safety-sensitive position, a drug/alcohol screen. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug/alcohol screen (if applicable).
