A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Job Description

CiTi BOCES has an opening for a full-time 2nd shift custodial worker (3:00pm - 11:30pm). This position is routine and repetitive manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and occasional minor maintenance tasks. Cleaning tasks are performed according to a well established procedure, and maintenance tasks are performed under direct supervision or according to specific instructions. Supervision is received from a custodian or other superior. Primary Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
  • Sweep and mops floors and stairs; Vacuum carpets
  • Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment; clean glass
  • Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures;
  • Polishes furniture and metal furnishings;
  • Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish and replace liners;
  • May clear snow and ice from walks;
  • May mow lawns, trim shrubs, rake leaves and perform a variety of other grounds-keeping tasks as assigned;
  • May deliver packages and messages;
  • Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of school building;
  • Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels;
  • Paints rooms and equipment and assists in making minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical repairs.
  • Sanitizing door handles, desk/table tops
  • Cleaning bathrooms, restocking toilet paper, paper towels, and soap supplies
  • Responsible for locking each room or building after cleaning is done
Qualifications:
Must be Civil Service eligible and have a valid driver's license. Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks; get along well with others; thoroughness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
