Job Description:
The Eugene Mission is a Christ-centered organization which shares Hope with hurting people. The Custodian/Guest Life Skills Crew Leader is a key staff member of the Facilities team responsible not only for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly campus, but also for actively leading, training, coaching, and supervising guests in custodial and janitorial work assignments throughout high-traffic areas of the Mission. This position places a strong emphasis on hands-on teaching, mentoring, accountability, and life-skills development. The Custodian / Guest Life Skills Crew Leader works closely with guests form diverse backgrounds, including individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction recovery, trauma, mental health challenges, and reentry from incarceration. The ideal candidate demonstrate patience, consistency, leadership and servant-hearted communication while maintaining high cleanliness standards in a fast-paced environment serving a large population.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead, train, and supervise guests in daily custodial and janitorial duties throughout high-traffic areas of the Mission campus. Provide hands-on instruction in proper cleaning techniques, workplace safety, equipment operation, and sanitation standards. Assign, monitor, and evaluate guest Life Skill work assignments with consistency, accountability, and encouragement. Teach appropriate use of custodial tools, chemicals, cleaning equipment, and safety procedures. Model professionalism, teamwork, work ethic, punctuality, and respectful communication. Remind and enforce campus policies in a loving, calm, and matter-of-fact manner. Assist guests with understanding workplace expectations, policies, and procedures. Build positive working relationships with guests while maintaining healthy professional boundaries. Communicate concerns, behavioral issues, safety risks, and guest interactions to management to help maintain a safe and caring environment. Utilize de-escalation skills and maintain composure during stressful or emergency situations. Maintain buildings and common areas in a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly condition. Perform heavy cleaning duties including stripping and waxing floors, cleaning walls, floors, glass, ceilings, fixtures, and removing garbage. Ensure high-traffic areas remain clean, stocked, and presentable throughout the day. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and shampoo carpets as needed. Wash and sanitize toilets, sinks, showers, and other restroom facilities. Restock soaps, paper products, shampoos, cleaning supplies, and sanitation materials campus-wide. Prepare and mix cleaning solutions according to specifications and safety procedures. Clean bodily fluids and biohazardous waste according to established operating procedures. Set up, arrange, clean, and break down event and gathering spaces. Maintain exterior areas including entrances, walkways, lawns, plants, and shrubbery. Utilize approved pest-control products to help prevent infestations. Assist with snow removal and minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs or moving furniture. Report facility or equipment damage and maintenance concerns to the Facilities Director. Ensure proper care, storage, and maintenance of cleaning equipment and supplies. Promote workplace safety and environmental best practices. Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and professional standards. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Compassion for hurting and vulnerable individuals and a heart to serve the community. Strong leadership ability with experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, or supervising others in work assignments or life-skills development. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including individuals with addiction, trauma, criminal history, and mental health challenges. Demonstrates humility, honesty, integrity, patience, enthusiasm, and servant leadership. Strong interpersonal communication and conflict de-escalation skills. Ability to maintain authority, consistency, and accountability while building respectful relationships. Ability to organize, prioritize, coordinate, and oversee multiple work assignments in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team environment. Strong organizational and time management skills. Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to learn new systems quickly. Minimum of 2 years of applicable custodial, janitorial, facilities, or related experience preferred. Previous experience leading, supervising, or training crews, volunteers, or teams strongly preferred. Knowledge of industrial cleaning equipment, cleaning chemicals, and safe disposal practices. Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices preferred. Ability to multitask and maintain direction despite frequent interruptions. Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies. Mature Christian in alignment with the Eugene Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and ladders, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment, heavy machinery, and power tools safely.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent movement and interruptions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and by telephone.

Pay:
