Function:

A School Custodian is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of the assigned facility and surrounding grounds. The School Custodian is responsible for the general security of the assigned facility. The School Custodian reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer or designee with direction from the School Principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for a variety of cleaning and maintenance functions and manual labor duties in a school building on a daily basis including, but not limited to: cleaning, housekeeping, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, washing windows, blinds and casements; changing inside and outside light bulbs, policing grounds, sweeping walks, and removing snow and ice as needed. Responsible for minor carpentry repairs as instructed such as minor repairs to secure table legs; replace handles, knobs, light bulbs and similar items; tightens screws, replaces nails and performs related tasks. Responsible for the maintenance of custodial equipment and storage areas. Responsible for cleaning of assigned classrooms, office and bathrooms, mirrors and fixtures; replace filters, emptying and removing trash. Responsible for washing, waxing, and sealing floors according to prescribed procedures and schedules. Responsible for completing requisitions and receiving cleaning supplies and equipment, and maintaining necessary inventories. Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned and are consistent with this position.

Critical Skills, Experience, and Knowledge:

General knowledge of and familiarity with standard custodial, cleaning, sanitizing, and housekeeping requirements, equipment, and tools. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to read labels on cleaning or other custodial products and equipment. Ability to plan and work independently or follow immediate direction upon request. Ability to learn and operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment and to perform the work successfully. Ability to adhere to safety precautions and perform duties in a timely manner. Demonstrates strong customer service skills and the ability to interact patiently and positively. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with the general public and co-workers. Demonstrates good communication skills orally and in writing. Ability to work independently

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalency. Ability to work days or nights, and weekends as needed Fluency in reading and writing in English is essential Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to pass the Custodian test with a 70 or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in a custodian/janitorial position Previous experience in a school-based environment Proficiency in using computer-based systems, including but not limited to Google and Microsoft products.

Physical Environment/Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

The work environment is typically within a school setting, although the employee may meet with other employees and agencies in an outside environment. The working conditions (light, noise level, temperature, etc. are typical of (primarily) a school setting with a moderate level of intensity. The employee will occasionally work in severe weather conditions (sun, heat, ice, cold, snow) Specific constantly used physical abilities include walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stretching, bending, good hand-eye coordination, handle or feel objects or tools, ability to reach and grasp with hands and arms, ability to maintain balance, ability to speak, hear and smell. Specific frequently used physical ability to lift, move and carry objects from twenty-five (50) pounds to fifty (75) pounds with or without assistance. Specific occasionally used physical abilities include the ability to use computer monitors, sitting, fine motor skills for typing and writing and the ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone.
