To Be Determined Job Description General Definition of Work The Lead Custodian is responsible for supervising and coordinating custodial services to ensure that the school building and grounds are maintained in a safe, clean, attractive, and efficient condition that supports effective learning. This position provides leadership and guidance to custodial staff, while monitoring job performance, and ensures compliance with established safety and maintenance standards. The role includes maintaining custodial supplies and equipment inventories, assisting with scheduling and work assignments, and maintaining accurate records and reports. Work is performed under the supervision of the Zone Manager and school Principal. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Rock Hill Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions:
Instruct custodians verbally or in writing in building and grounds custodial and routine preventive maintenance activities. Monitors the job performance of custodians. Provides verbal and written guidance regarding job performance. When necessary, documents job performance, corrects substandard performance, and uses the Progressive Discipline Policy to address deficiencies in the performance of custodians. Assists in scheduling and assigning extra time and duties for custodians. Maintains inventory of custodial/maintenance supplies and equipment. Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building. Performs ongoing preventive maintenance and minor repair on plumbing, custodial equipment, ventilation, building structure and hardware. Performs normal operator adjustments, and service to facility operational equipment such as, but not limited to, compressors, boilers, unit ventilators and fans and maintains records on operational and maintenance activities. Performs minor electrical, air conditioning, and plumbing maintenance and repairs. Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building or in obtaining and setting up needed equipment and or material. Maintains building and grounds security by opening and closing the building each day. Maintains work related records and prepares various reports as directed. Ensures Safety program of classified staff per OSHA general industry standards. Performs other duties as assigned by the foreman or principal. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Principles, methods, and techniques of custodial work, facility maintenance, and preventive care. Commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism within the school environment. Safe operation, use, and maintenance of custodial tools, materials, and equipment. Occupational safety standards and OSHA regulations related to custodial and operations. Proper handling and disposal of cleaning agents and hazardous materials. Effective supervision, leadership, and performance evaluation methods. Planning, organizing, and prioritizing work assignments to meet schedules and deadlines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working effectively with staff, supervisors, and the public. Ability to train and motivate custodial staff, monitor performance, and ensure high-quality work. Ability to perform and oversee routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs. Skill in maintaining accurate records, inventories, and reports. Ability to exercise sound judgment, respond to emergencies, and work independently or as part of a team. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with subordinates, as well as other staff and administrators. Education and Experience Must have at least one year of building level experience. High school graduate or GED preferred. Must be 18 years old. Thorough knowledge of proper custodial procedures. Special Requirements Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided. Physical Requirements/ Work Conditions Regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach with hands and arms. Frequently climb ladders and use hand strength to operate tools and equipment. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 90 lbs (e.g., furniture, equipment, supplies). Push and pull heavy items such as tables, bleachers, and floor machines. Specific vision abilities include close, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor duties. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, and equipment noise. May work in confined spaces, on ladders, or in varying temperatures. Occasional evenings, weekends, or overtime required for events or emergencies. Must follow all district safety procedures and OSHA standards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals which may include petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.
