A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

This is accomplished by completing routine cleaning, stocking and managing supply inventory, and related maintenance tasks. Maintains the upkeep and cleanliness of municipal facilities by ensuring all floors are mopped, swept, and vacuumed; wiping all glass surfaces and windows in high traffic areas; and removal and sorting of all trash and recycling items from assigned work spaces. Cleans all restrooms by cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces; cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures; and restocking facility supplies. Completes periodic maintenance by completing tasks such as scheduled dust removal on all surfaces in assigned areas; stripping and waxing of hard surface flooring; shampooing of all high traffic carpet surfaces; and cleaning of bathroom floors. Supervises supply inventory by documenting supplies and equipment used and/or needed and submitting requests for supply replenishment. Assist with facility maintenance by reporting facility maintenance needs. High School diploma or equivalent Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in facility maintenance operations. Knowledge of standard safety processes, work gear and procedures. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials.
