Kennel Technician Job Description Position Summary At Homestead Animal Hospital, our Kennel Technicians are an essential part of our patient care team. They help ensure every pet receives compassionate, attentive care while maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our patients, boarding guests, and staff. Essential Responsibilities Patient & Boarding Care Feed all hospitalized and boarding pets according to doctor instructions and boarding care sheets. Ensure every patient has fresh water available unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. Walk dogs multiple times throughout the day and clean up all pet waste immediately. Clean litter boxes and monitor elimination habits for hospitalized and boarding cats. Administer medications as directed by a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Observe patients for changes in appetite, attitude, urination, defecation, vomiting, coughing, or other signs of illness and immediately report concerns to the medical team. Record patient observations accurately when required. Bathe boarding pets or hospitalized patients when scheduled or medically indicated. Safely move patients throughout the hospital using proper restraint and handling techniques. Kennel & Hospital Cleaning Duties Clean, disinfect, and sanitize kennels after every patient discharge using hospital-approved disinfectants. Maintain a clean and odor-free kennel area at all times. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and disinfect all hospital floors throughout the day. Clean exam rooms between appointments as needed. Clean treatment areas and restock supplies throughout the day. Empty trash and biohazard containers according to hospital protocols. Wash, dry, fold, and organize laundry continuously throughout each shift. Clean food and water bowls after every use. Keep outdoor walking areas clean by picking up pet waste throughout the day. Assist with deep cleaning projects on a rotating schedule. Veterinary Team Support Safely restrain dogs and cats during examinations, nail trims, blood draws, radiographs, treatments, and procedures. Assist technicians with patient setup and recovery under supervision. Transport patients between boarding, treatment, surgery, and exam rooms. Prepare kennels for incoming patients with clean bedding, dishes, and identification cards. Restock treatment, kennel, and cleaning supplies. Notify supervisors when inventory is running low. Assist with opening and closing hospital duties. Help maintain an organized treatment area to promote efficiency and patient safety. Daily Facility Responsibilities Complete assigned opening, midday, and closing kennel checklists. Ensure all doors, gates, and kennels remain securely latched. Monitor hospital cleanliness throughout the day and address messes immediately. Report equipment malfunctions or facility concerns promptly. Follow OSHA safety standards and hospital infection-control protocols. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required. Client Service Greet boarding clients with professionalism and compassion. Escort pets safely to and from the hospital when requested. Review boarding belongings to ensure medications, food, and personal items are properly labeled. Communicate professionally with clients while maintaining confidentiality. Represent Homestead Animal Hospital in a positive and caring manner at all times. Team Expectations Arrive to work on time and prepared for each shift. Maintain a positive attitude and willingness to assist all departments. Accept direction from veterinarians, technicians, leads, and management. Assist coworkers whenever patient care or hospital operations require additional help. Participate in staff meetings and required training. Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the hospital dress code. Treat every patient as if they were your own pet while upholding

Qualifications Previous experience working with animals is preferred but not required—we are happy to train motivated individuals with a passion for animal care. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Strong work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to multitask and remain calm in a busy hospital environment. Dependable, punctual, and willing to learn. Comfortable working around animals, cleaning products, and bodily fluids. Physical Requirements This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Frequently bend, squat, kneel, lift, and climb stairs. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and over 50 pounds with assistance. Safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments. Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Work weekends, holidays, and flexible shifts as needed. Tolerate exposure to animal hair, dander, noise, odors, cleaning chemicals, and bodily fluids.
