What they do

A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

General Responsibilities:
Performs custodial work in the care and cleaning of school buildings, ensuring safe, clean, and orderly conditions. Requires cleaning school building interiors and maintaining school grounds. For more information see the job description page on the FCCPS website.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
Physical Requirements:
Is heavy work, requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires climbing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Requires vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Subjects the worker to inside and outside environmental conditions, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Possibly exposes the worker to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
