Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION
To supervise campus custodial and housekeeping services. To coordinate with conference office personnel and conference/event clients to ensure facilities are prepared and set up for meetings and conferences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan, supervise and coordinate daily custodial/housekeeping services for a Vermont State University (VTSU) campus.
Supervise custodial/housekeeping staff:
interview, hire and train new employees; manage performance. Plan and issue daily work assignments; monitor work in progress and check completed work; assist staff with difficult or unusual tasks or problems. Plan for staffing needs and work schedules; review, coordinate and approve time off requests and timesheets as required. Ensure compliance with the applicable terms of the union contract covering the custodial staff's terms of employment. Oversee the distribution of supplies and equipment; order and maintain appropriate inventories of all materials used. Ensures adherence to required and recommended use of materials and supplies. Ensures adherence to OSHA and HazMat procedures. Collaborates with custodial supervisors at other campuses to identify and implement best practices in the field. Discuss and implement new cleaning techniques and procedures as appropriate. Oversee set-up of meeting and conference spaces for internal and external groups according to schedule. Meet and greet event leadership and coordinate onsite needs (IT, food services, etc.) Act as liaison between event and campus personnel. Prepare administrative reports on work performed, inventory, and the like. Open and check academic buildings during academic year and for outside groups. Monitor custodial services expenditures and ensure that budget guidelines are met. Ensure that all applicable work safety and security procedures are followed. Perform regular quality control inspections. Perform custodial/housekeeping duties as needed. Assist with snow removal management. Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
This position reports to the Associate Director of Campus Operations.
Supervision Exercised:
Supervises custodial and housekeeping staff, including hiring and performance management.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school education plus a minimum of five to seven years of relevant work experience (custodial or housekeeping) or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Supervisory experience preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge Knowledge of and experience implementing commercial/institutional custodial/housekeeping operations. Skills Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines. Basic reading, math (addition, subtraction) and writing skills. Basic computer skills (email, internet, and online data management). Abilities Ability to deal effectively with a broad range of individuals/groups within and outside of the university. Strong customer service orientation. Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment. Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to manage unplanned custodial or housekeeping needs. Essential Physical Demands. Requires the ability to lift and move supplies, equipment and furniture (up to 50 pounds). Requires the ability to access certain areas of the building and supplies by climbing stairs and ladders. Requires a full range of motion in order to operate manual and electronically-powered cleaning equipment and machines to include snow shovels. Ability to bend and turn to pick up, place and move furniture, supplies and equipment. Employees in this job classification are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather.
