Lifeguard Short-Term Worker Salary $22.00 Hourly Location Swim Center Job Type Short Term Job Number 00871 Department Parks, Recreation, Forestry Division Aquatics Opening Date 04/08/2026 Closing Date 4/26/2026 11:59 PM Mountain FLSA Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit N/A Description Questions Position Summary Summer is almost here, and the City of Bozeman is now recruiting for Short Term Lifeguards! We are looking for candidates who can commit to the entire season (June 15 th through the end of August, with some flexibility). If you are selected for an interview, the interview will consist of two parts: an oral interview portion and a swim test. The swim test will be conducted on the same day and consists of two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations including a swim-tread-swim sequence and a timed surface dive rescue event. Lifeguard short-term workers ensure patron safety at the City of Bozeman's aquatic facilities and provide swimming instruction for the summer.

All-Staff training will occur June 15-19. This training is required for all to attend. If a candidate is not already Lifeguard/First Aid and CPR/AED certified through the City of Bozeman they MUST attend one of these two courses, Lifeguard Courses June 5-7 or June 11-13.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities, providing active accident prevention, and monitoring patrons in the water, and completing rescue accident and incident reports. Provides customer service, including answering questions, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs, answering phones and directing calls, and registering patrons for programs. Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including cleaning locker rooms, lobby area, pool deck, and restrooms, and ensuring pool, equipment room, and pool deck are clear of potentially dangerous objects or situations. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification. Minimum Required Qualifications Must be at least 15 years old; and Aquatics/Lifeguarding experience is desired, but not required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge swimming and lifeguarding techniques. Thorough knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and use of AED. Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life threatening injuries. Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, community and recreation programs. Ability to properly perform rescues. Ability to instruct individuals on pool and water safety. Ability to accurately operate point-of-sale and pass registration computer program. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public. Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact. Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations. Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks. Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines. Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks. Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City's Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork. Required Special Qualifications Must successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations including a swim-tread-swim sequence and a timed surface dive rescue event; Must obtain within 1 month of hire and maintain the following: Red Cross Lifeguarding with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification; Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory responses to appropriate post conditional offer process; 01 Please describe your availability, including any times or dates that you will be unavailable to work.
