Job Description

GENERAL FUNCTION
Maintains safe conditions in the swimming pool, deck, splash pad and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum age of 15.
Certifications:
CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Must be available on days, evenings and weekends.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool areas.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Reports any concerns to Director of Aquatics immediately. Completes related reports as required. (including incident reports within 24 hours ).
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Performs chemical testing every two hours. Maintains accurate records as required by the Health Department code and YMCA standards.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Monitor the pool for hazardous conditions.
  • No cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, or other devices are permitted during shifts.
  • Appropriate swim attire (full guard uniform) per Dress Code.
  • Attending all staff meetings, in-service training, and assigned work shifts.
  • Able to administer swim tests to patrons to determine swimming skills.
  • Completion of Redwoods Insurance training within 30 days of hire.
  • All other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the aquatic area. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • See and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Swim 1200 yds a month.
  • Able to retrieve the Brick off the bottom of the pool assigned to.
EFFECT ON END RESULTS
  • The YMCA will provide a safe environment for all swimmers.
  • The YMCA will gain and retain members.
  • YMCA programs will grow.
  • YMCA members will become more engaged in the YMCA mission.
Pay:
$15.00 - $16.90 per hour
