Variable Hours Job Purpose:
To ensure the safety of all campers, volunteers, and staff at the pond. The lifeguard will be responsible for preventing accidents, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a safe pond environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure the safety and well-being of all swimmers by actively monitoring assigned areas. Know, understand, and consistently enforce pond rules and in a professional manner; warn swimmers of unsafe behaviors or conditions. Assess situations promptly and make sound, safety-based decisions. Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations. Perform water rescues using appropriate equipment and techniques. Administer first aid, CPR, use AED when needed. Stay alert and attentive at all times, observing campers, volunteers, and staff in assigned zones. Conduct age-specific swimming tests to assess swimmer's proficiency and fit children with appropriate-size life jackets. Communicate clearly with campers, volunteers, and staff. Report incidents to Camp Director in a timely manner; complete incident report documentation, when appropriate. Assist and observe other water-related activities at camp. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.
Key Skill Areas:
Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies, assess situations promptly, make sound, safety-based decisions. Ability to perform appropriate rescue techniques and first aid, including CPR and AED, to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies. Possesses strong swimming skills and physical stamina to monitor the pond and perform rescues when necessary. High level of vigilance and situational awareness to constantly monitor the area for signs of distress. Ability to remain calm and alert in emergency situations and respond accordingly. Excellent communication skills to clearly and effectively convey safety instructions and rules to swimmers, as well as to coordinate with other lifeguards and emergency personnel. Interpersonal skills to establish a safe and respectful environment for all individuals at the pond. Physical fitness and endurance to withstand demanding conditions such as heat, cold, and long periods of standing or swimming.
General Qualifications:
• Minimum age of 16 years. Current lifeguard certification (American Red Cross or equivalent). Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Previous lifeguard experience preferred. Maintains lifeguard certification-level physical and mental readiness. Physical ability to use aquatic safety equipment and meet strength and endurance requirements for rescues. Demonstrates a strong work ethic, characterized by being team-oriented, task-focused, people-friendly, and self-motivated.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
This position requires: High level of vigilance and situational awareness to constantly monitor the area for signs of distress. Strong swimming skills and ability to swim 300 yards continuously. Ability to dive to a depth of 10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object. Physical ability to use aquatic safety equipment and meet strength and endurance requirements for rescues. Adequate vision (with or without correction) to observe all areas of the pond. Ability to hear distress signals and emergency communications. Must be able to stand and swim for extended periods. Quick reflexes and ability to respond immediately to emergencies. Ability and endurance to work outdoors in various mountain weather conditions, including heat, sun, wind, and cold water in the pond for extended periods. Maintain overall fitness level to perform rescues and emergency procedures effectively.
