POSITION SUMMARY
The Lifeguard ensures the safety and well-being of all members and participants in and around the pool area by maintaining vigilant surveillance and responding quickly to emergencies. You are a key player in fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment aligned with the YMCA's core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility .KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain constant and attentive surveillance of the pool.
- Proactively prevent accidents and enforce all aquatic rules.
- Respond immediately and appropriately to emergencies.
- Conduct routine safety checks and record water chemical levels.
- Communicate with members in a friendly, helpful, and inclusive manner.
- Assist in audits, skill checks, and ongoing emergency response training.
- Uphold the YMCA's mission and ensure a welcoming, achievement-focused environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum age: 16
- Current certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid (we will certify if needed)
- YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification (we provide training!)
- Physical and mental readiness to respond to emergencies
- Demonstrated competency in lifeguard skills per certifying body standards
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to pass lifeguard swim test
- Remain alert and scan pool area continuously
- Sit or stand for extended periods
- Recognize and respond to distress signals
- Perform strenuous rescue tasks when necessary
- Project voice clearly in both calm and emergency situations
