Description SUMMARY The Lifeguard has a legal duty to protect the safety of people in an assigned area. The Lifeguard has a professional obligation to prevent potential accidents by enforcing the rules and regulations of an aquatic setting and to react to any emergencies that occur.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1
) Must be able to read and interpret printed material and illustrations. 2) Must have good eye-hand coordination. 3) Must be able to: a) Anticipate how and where incidents will occur b) Recognize incidents utilizing the "10/20 Protection Rule." c) Effectively manage incidents with skills that must be maintained at a "test-ready" competency, including: i) NPWLTP technical skills ii) ECSI Professional Rescuer CPR iii)
ECSI AED
iv) ECSI First Aid v) ECSI Oxygen Administration d) Think critically about complications that might arise in real situations e) Act in a professional manner f) Protect personal safety and well-being g) Understand how to prevent exposure to disease transmission h) Abide by the contents and obligations as set forth in the NPWLTP Lifeguard License Agreement 4) Able to lift and drag up to 150 pounds unassisted. 5) Able to sit and/or stand for extended periods, including in elevated chairs. 6) Able to visually inspect the conditions of pools and swimmers with 20/20 vision in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses). 7) Able to hear noises and sounds of distress even outside of one's vision. 8) Able to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across large distances. 9) Ability to follow and accomplish technical and complex instructions and procedures.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining an environment that is both safe and pleasant for pool patrons by maintaining a 10/20 send protection standard. 2. The Lifeguard is responsible for attending weekly in-service training sessions, as well as any others deemed necessary by the Aquatics Department. 3. The Lifeguard must maintain their test readiness at all times while employed. (Test-ready - required to pass the ECSI and NPWLTP course skills examinations at any time.) 4. The Lifeguard is required to assist in maintaining a high level of customer service (Aloha Spirit). 5. The Lifeguard performs other tasks and/or related duties as assigned or required by management and supervisors when necessary.

3/27/2025 6. The Lifeguard is to wear an approved uniform and any necessary job-related safety equipment during assigned shifts or anytime while on duty. 7. The Lifeguard may be subject to both pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening during the tenure of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 1.
Ability to properly and safely operate equipment used. 2. Must be 16 years of age or older. 3. Knowledge of the standards of care in the aquatic industry. 4. Demonstrated ability to work independently. 5. Ability to communicate effectively with the public, guests, and staff members. 6. Must be firm, fair, consistent, and courteous in order to gain the respect and cooperation of the public. 7. Must have a positive attitude in order to fully cooperate with other guards in a team effort and adhere to rules and regulations to ensure the successful operation of the facility. 8. Must have the physical and mental condition necessary to properly and timely activate and complete the EAP system in the case of an emergency. 9. Must possess good oral communication skills. 10. Must be skilled in the use and care of supplied equipment. 11. Independent judgment concerning work methods and procedures is required.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS 1.
The Lifeguard must possess a Special Facilities/Shallow Water Lifeguard license from the National Pool and Water Park Lifeguard Training Program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS 1.
Ability to stand for long periods. 2. Ability to bend, squat, kneel, reach, stretch, and climb without difficulty. 3. Ability to effectively work at different heights. 4. Able to swim 200 yards continuously using breaststroke and/or front crawl. 5. Able to retrieve a ten-pound diving brick from the deepest part of the pool and bring it to the wall. 6. Able to tread water without using hands or arms for a period of two minutes. 7. Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. 8. Able to exit the lifeguard stand in an emergency. 9. Able to exit any/all of the pools without the use of a ladder or any additional assistance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1
) Able to work in a team environment as both a team member and a team leader. 2) Must work in environmental conditions that include, but are not limited to: a) Wet and humid environments. b) Indoor environmental conditions with up to 90% humidity and temperatures ranging from 70°F to 120°F. 3) Possible exposure to chemicals, fumes, dirt, caustic chemicals, acids, odors, waste, and dust. 4) Uniformed position.
