Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Maintains safe conditions around the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; Answers questions from members to support them in their activities and safety. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains active surveillance around the pool area and intervenes when necessary. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations. Assists Lifeguards in EAPS where appropriate. Performs equipment checks and ensures equipment is available, clean, and serviceable. Administers a height check to assess which individuals should wear appropriate lifejackets; helps individuals select and don lifejackets. Dispatches swimmers at the top of slides to go down safely, according to lifeguards' signal. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants. Attends all staff meetings and in-service training. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum age of 16.
Certifications:
CPR/AED and First Aid within 30 days of hire date (or sooner if required by supervisor). Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment and Child abuse prevention training. Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
