Job Description

The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for planning, coordinating and managing courses. Must have the ability to communicate with people of all ages. Should have current certifications required by American Red Cross. Must be able to work between the hours of 8:00 a.m. until Noon, unless otherwise agreed upon.
REPORTS TO
Sports & Aquatics Coordinator Responsible for arriving to work on time and ready to work. Responsible for being a positive example to patrons. Responsible for the property of the City of Harker Heights Aquatics Center. Responsible for submitting reports to Pool Supervisor on accidents, damage to facilities and equipment, problems among staff, and complaints from facility users. Be familiar with course materials and know how to use them effectively. Plan, coordinate, and manage courses in conjunction with the local Red Cross unit. Adapt your teaching approaches to the experience, ability, and culture of participants so that they can meet course objectives. Provide for the health and safety of participants, including making sure that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe. Organize the class environment to enhance individual and group performance and to minimize distractions. Cover all material required in a course. Supervise and give guidance to any Water Safety Instructor Aides assisting with a course. Administer and score the final examination when applicable. Issue course-completion certificates. Attendance is an essential function of the job. Exhibits the City of Harker Heights' Core Values.
Knowledge, Skills, Experiences:
Must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Must be certified as a WSI First Aid & CPR. Should have experience in swim courses. This position requires good interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and visual awareness. The WSI is required to interact with all users of the pool. Must be able to relate rules and directions. This position requires the ability to provide support and encouragement to swimmers, and to communicate with the Aquatic Supervisor and the City of Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department.
