Head Lifeguard

II SUMMARY

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, a Head Lifeguard II creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes safety and engagement. A Head Lifeguard II must prevent and respond to accidents and injuries at the Tukwila Pool and they play a key role in supporting the Lifeguarding Team and TPMPD Policies & Procedures. A Head Lifeguard II is a first responder in emergencies and supports a culture of safety - in the water, on the pool deck, in locker rooms, and in lobby areas. A Head Lifeguard II may open or close the facility as a regular assignment, provide leadership as needed in the absence of a supervisor, and must interact with all patrons of the Tukwila Pool respectfully and work effectively with a diverse community.

HOURS, WAGE & BENEFITS

Hours:

This position is classified as part-time. A typical schedule for a weekend Headguard II consists of around 15-20 hours.

Rate of Pay:

$25.13 per hour for new hires. An experienced Head Lifeguard II is eligible for a higher pay rate of up to $27.47 per hour in keeping with the TPMPD Wage & Salary Schedule. Early morning (5:15 am - 9:00 am) shifts include an additional $1.00 per hour premium. Sunday shifts include an additional $2.00 per hour premium.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Proof of vaccination(s) may be required subject to TPMPD Policies & Procedures;
• Eighteen (18) years of age;
• One (1) year of Lifeguard experience preferred;
• Certifications (must be maintained throughout employment) : American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or equivalent), American Red Cross Lifeguard Management Certificate (obtain within ninety (90) days of employment) ;
• Must be observant and able to react calmly, quickly, and with good judgment in an emergency;
• Must pass an FBI & Washington State Patrol background check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide a safe environment by enforcing all facility rules, policies, and procedures;
• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance;
• Assist in providing care when needed in water and for land emergencies including examination of injured persons by effectively following the TPMPD Emergency Action Plan;
• Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available, as needed, and promptly report any problems;
• Provide great customer service to members, program participants and guests;
• Attend staff meetings and required trainings; and may facilitate auditing and ongoing safety trainings;
• Set up and store equipment for all recreational swims;
• Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas including locker rooms and lobby areas;
• Knowledgeable in all TPMPD procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately;
• Create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes patron safety and engagement in accordance with
• Prevent accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area and assigned zones, enforcing health and safety rules, and maintaining emergency readiness; May open or close the facility as a regular assignment and perform the duties related to the opening or closing of the facility;
• Complete daily reports as required including incident and accident reports as necessary;
• Perform chemical testing when not guarding as required, including all necessary documentation, and take the appropriate corrective action;
• Perform routine inspection of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness and promptly report any problems;
• Maintain aquatic program areas and equipment with high attention to cleanliness and safety;
• Assist at the front desk as needed: Greet the public and convey basic information about Tukwila Pool programs and schedules, over the phone and in person. Effectively utilize assigned TPMPD recreation software to complete customer transactions;
• Assist new employee onboarding;
• Provide leadership as needed in the absence of a supervisor and provide direction to Lifeguards; and
• Other duties as assigned.
