Tool Room Attendant Job Description This role supports a growing day-shift machine shop by managing all cutting tools, holders, inserts, gauges, and shop tooling from the tool crib. The Tool Room Attendant ensures that machinists receive complete, properly prepared tool sets on time, maintains accurate inventory, and helps minimize machine downtime through organized, proactive tooling management. Responsibilities Manage all cutting tools, holders, inserts, gauges, and shop tooling from the tool crib to support daily production needs. Run and operate a shrink setter machine to prepare and assemble tooling as required. Pick, kit, and stage complete tool sets for jobs based on routers, setup sheets, or CAM-generated tool lists. Issue tools to machinists, receive returned tools, and track usage, wear, and replacements to ensure availability. Maintain accurate tooling inventory, including inserts, endmills, drills, holders, fixtures, and consumable items. Pre-set tools for length and diameter, label them clearly, and ensure they are ready for installation on machines. Coordinate tool regrind, repair, and replacement, including managing vendor orders, lead times, and deliveries. Standardize tooling where possible to reduce variation, control costs, and shorten setup times. Keep the tool crib organized, clean, and audit-ready, maintaining clear labeling and storage systems. Work closely with programmers, setup machinists, and supervisors to prevent downtime due to missing, incorrect, or improperly prepared tools. Support general machine shop operations by aligning tooling availability with production schedules and priorities. Essential Skills Experience working in a machine shop environment. Hands-on experience with tool room or tool crib operations. Proficiency in inventory control and inventory tracking for tooling and consumables. Ability to operate a shrink setter machine. Familiarity with ERP systems for managing tooling and inventory data. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and tooling information from routers, setup sheets, or CAM tool lists. Strong organizational skills to maintain an orderly, audit-ready tool crib. Attention to detail in labeling, pre-setting, and staging tools for machinists. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in tooling management, including cutting tools, holders, inserts, gauges, and fixtures. Experience coordinating with vendors for tool regrind, repair, and replacement services. Understanding of standardization practices to reduce tooling variation and setup time. Work Environment This position is based in a mid-size machine shop located in Santa Ana, CA, operating on a day shift from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The facility employs around 45 people and continues to grow, with a machining team of about 25 and 4-5 programmers, as well as dedicated deburr, quality, and shipping departments. You will work in a production-focused environment that relies on modern machining equipment, a structured tool crib, and ERP systems to manage workflow and inventory. The role requires working on-site in a shop setting, moving between the tool crib and the machining area, and collaborating closely with multiple departments to support ongoing production.
