Job Description

Job Summary:
Occoneechee State Park is seeking qualified and enthusiastic applicants to fill the Housekeeping Ranger position. The primary focus of the Housekeeping Ranger includes proper and prompt cleaning of cabins, restrooms, campground bathhouses, and other park facilities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Efficient turnover of overnight facilities before check-in time
  • Proper cleaning of restrooms, bathhouses, and other facilities.
  • Keep chases and linen building organized and stocked.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evening shifts.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Ability to stand, bend, and work outdoors exposed to the elements.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of cleaning tasks and to tolerate contact with a variety of cleaning products and solutions.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Must be able to work well with other staff and park guests.
Additional Considerations:
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and the use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety practices related to the work site.
  • Previous experience working in a housekeeping or janitorial setting is preferred
  • Demonstrate the ability to work on your own.
  • Ability to handle issues arising in the use of the facility by visitors.

    Background Check:
    Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
      Employment Eligibility:
      Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
        Driver's License Requirement:
        A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
          Work Requirements:
          Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30. Minorities, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and people with National Parks Service experience are encouraged to apply.

          • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
          • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as: o Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
          o Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. o Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount. There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. Employer participates in e-Verify.
