  • August 5, 2025 to May 29, 2026 SUMMARY To assist in providing safe transportation of special needs students to and from designated locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
  • Operation of lifts for wheelchairs and assisting disabled students.
  • Maintains good student conduct on the bus.
  • Secures special equipment that may accompany the student.
  • Is alert to any conditions in the loading and unloading area which present a danger to students.
  • Communicates in an appropriate fashion with students, parents and employees.
  • Knowledge of the order of student stops to assist with pick up and drop off.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises students while being transported on a school bus.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Able to pass standard physical examination (renewed every 24 months) and drug screen.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. OTHER SKILLS and

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students. Ability to obtain and maintain current first aid/CPR certification and ability to complete training on providing transportation as a related service to students with disabilities. SUMMARY:
Oversees and conducts mechanical repairs on District vehicles, including gasoline and diesel powered engines; to perform diagnostic activities for vehicle repair; vehicles maintained include cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment and related vehicles; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class within the Automotive Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Automotive Technician I II and III by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of all policies and procedures within the work unit. Positions are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from external sources, have prior experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here: 1. Perform a variety of maintenance, inspection, diagnostic and repair duties on District vehicles; vehicles maintained include diesel and gasoline powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment and related vehicles. 2. Perform diagnostic analysis of vehicle failure by using current computer software programs. 3. Analyze vehicle and equipment failures; determine problems and causes; recommend and implement solutions. 4. Repair or replace faulty parts and components including, but not limited to, wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems and related components. 5. Perform a variety of minor and major vehicle and equipment repairs including engine overhaul, chassis, suspension, electrical, and hydraulic repair. 6. Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform engine tune-ups; rebuild and overhaul engines; perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment. 7. Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubricating and replacing worn parts; perform clutch and brake repair activities. 8. Repair minor vehicle damage; replace broken windows; touch up minor scrapes and dents; repair upholstery as needed. 9. Change and repair tires; install and service batteries, spark plugs, fan belts and other mechanical components. 10. Maintain vehicle records including gas, oil and other fluid usage, mileage, and repair activities. 11. Perform service calls; pick up and deliver parts and vehicles to various locations as needed; road-test vehicles to ensure proper operation. 12. Order and purchase tools, supplies, equipment and parts; maintain stock inventory. 13. Read and interpret wiring diagrams and other technical documentation as required. 14. Assist in the general maintenance and cleaning of the garage. 15. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area. 16. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. 17. Drive Class B motor vehicles, including school bus as needed, to transport students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of internal combustion engines. Principles and practices of inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing gas and diesel powered engines. A proficient working knowledge of various diagnostic software for analyzing vehicle and bus failures. Methods and techniques of troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicle equipment and system malfunctions. Operational characteristics of vehicle diagnostic equipment and tools. Methods and techniques of inventory control. Shop management practices.
Ability to:
Use a computer proficiently. Learn and use associated computer programs for inventory to ensure adequate supplies of parts and equipment. Perform the full range of vehicle diagnostics with the most current diagnostic equipment. Perform major vehicle maintenance and repair duties. Conduct safety inspections on District vehicles. Maintain vehicle preventive maintenance schedules. Coordinate vehicle service activities with District departments.
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in automotive repair.
Experience:
Three years increasingly responsible automotive maintenance and repair experience.
License or Certificate:
Must obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with proper endorsements for school bus to be eligible to transport students, as needed (will train).
