Job Title:
Bus Monitor Reports to: Transportation Coordinator Date Dept. /

Primary Purpose:
Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on the assigned route. Assist the driver of a school bus that transports students with disabilities and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.

Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment Ability to work well with children with students of all ages to include those with disabilities Ability to manage student behavior

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Student Management 1. Assist students on and off the bus according to their individual needs including lifting and carrying students with disabilities. 2. Supervise students as they board, leave the bus and cross the street. 3. Instruct students and enforce safe riding rules and regulations. 4. Maintain appropriate discipline for students and report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator. 5. Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus. 6. Learn and adapt to each students special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Routes and Schedules:
7. Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to the driver. 8. Assist the driver with maintaining an updated route schedule.
Safety:
9. Operate equipment according to established safety procedures. Make sure seat belts, harnesses, or car seats are used correctly and help students use safety devices when needed. 10. Help Driver to inspect the bus to ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving. 11. Follow emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and assist the driver to administer first aid, if necessary.
Other:
12. Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices. 13. Assists in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition. 14. Work irregular hours as needed. 15. Report to work on time and absent only with a good cause. 16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:
Wheelchair lifts ramp, 6 point wheel chair straps, locks, seatbelts, vest, car seats, special adaptive equipment, safety equipment (reflective signs), and fire extinguisher.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional district wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Report to work on time and absent only with good cause. Perform other duties as assigned.
