HOURS & TIME COMMITMENT
This internship works part-time hours during regular operating hours Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Additionally, hours may include nights or weekends for events. Internship work schedules are flexible and arranged between the Intern and the Recreation & Community Services Department.
POSITION
The Recreation & Community Services Intern is a member of the City's Recreation & Community Services Department. The position is responsible for a assisting in planning, promoting, and executing community programs, special events, sports activities and community service activities for diverse age groups. Responsibilities include supervising activities, ensuring participant safety, conducting facility maintenance such as set up and teardown, researching and planning logistics for events and programs, and providing customer service. The position will gain experience in program logistics, marketing, program research and implementation, and, in some cases, therapeutic, outdoor or administrative duties. Weekly and evening work is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Under the direction of the Recreation & Community Services Department, Intern is required to perform the following essential job functions: Assist with the logistics, set up, operation, and breakdown of programs for all ages, special events, youth and adult sports activities. Perform research as instructed. Directly lead or assist in recreation activities for participants of all ages. Greet the public, answer inquiries, and address participant needs. Design flyers, create program descriptions and assist with outreach for events and programs. Assist with registration, data entry, budget tracking, and evaluation reports. Ensure safety of programs participants and facility, cleanliness, and proper set up of equipment, parks and facilities. Enforce safety rules, monitor participant behavior, and maintain facility security. Type correspondence, memorandums, lists, etc. Answer phones and route call in a courteous and professional manner. Respond to inquiries from the public and other City staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
: Ability to use a computer and other modern business equipment (Windows XP; Microsoft Suite). Knowledge of modern office practices. Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Familiar with city government policies and practices. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to deal courteously and effectively with City staff both over the telephone and in person. Knowledge of alphanumeric filing systems. Ability to prepare reports and communicate information to city departments
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (college associate degree is preferred) or any combination of training and experience that may provide the required knowledge, ability, and skill. Municipal Government experience is not required but is desirable.
