POSITION SUMMARY
The Climbing Wall Assistant supports the delivery of climbing wall programs and activities at the Nampa Recreation Center, providing instruction, safety oversight, and participant engagement. This role ensures a safe, inclusive environment for climbers of all ages and abilities while promoting recreational participation. Working under the supervision of the Shift Manager, the position involves independent judgment within established guidelines. Duties are performed in a recreational facility setting, which may include variable hours to accommodate program schedules. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support departmental operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Instructs or assists with instruction in wall climbing programs, providing individual or group guidance to participants of various age groups to help them achieve personal goals safely and progressively. Collaborates with program leadership to ensure participants meet activity objectives while maintaining engagement and interest. Delivers standard information to patrons about departmental procedures, requirements, and related recreation opportunities to enhance their experience at city facilities. Assists in planning group and individual promotional activities to boost program participation and community involvement. Coordinates responses to emergencies involving program participants, facility users, or climbing incidents, including requesting medical or other personnel support and completing required accident reports. Promotes injury prevention through ongoing monitoring and enforcement of safety protocols. Maintains accurate records and files related to the program, including inventories of handouts, forms, and reports. Utilizes standard office equipment and performs routine administrative support duties to facilitate program operations.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Assists with general facility maintenance or non-climbing recreation activities during low-volume periods. Proficiency in operating personal computers using standard or customized software for assigned tasks, with the ability and willingness to learn new skills and technologies quickly. May perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS
High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions (e.g., prior experience in recreation, coaching, or climbing instruction preferred but not required). CPR/AED certification with a hands-on skills assessment completed in person. Must be at least 16 years of age.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of climbing wall techniques, equipment uses, and related life-saving methods (e.g., belaying, knot-tying). Knowledge of basic first aid, CPR, and injury prevention/treatment principles. Knowledge of current best practices in climbing activities, including safety standards and program goals. Knowledge of techniques for interacting with diverse individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Strong organizational skills. Skilled in instructing or assisting participants in climbing wall use, adapting to different skill levels and ages. Skilled in interpreting, applying, and explaining procedures, regulations, and safety guidelines. Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines to support program flow. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, program participants, and the public. Ability to engage successfully with diverse groups, promoting inclusivity and positive experiences. Ability to adapt to dynamic recreational settings, handling multiple tasks while prioritizing safety and participant needs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational environment.
