A Recreation or Activities Worker leads tours and vacation trips in outdoor or wilderness areas. Leads hiking, rafting, canoeing, climbing or diving activities for a group. Provides specialized knowledge about the history, terrain, ecology or wildlife for the tour. Manages transportation, equipment and provisions and assists with cooking.
General Statement of Duties The primary function of an employee in this class is to coordinate, operate, supervise, and evaluate recreation programs and assist the parks/public works department with maintenance needs. Work involves the coordination of youth and adult athletic programs but may include special events and other recreational program offerings with community needs and desires. The Parks and Recreation Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Public Works Director. This position may supervise community service and/or program volunteers, part-time and casual recreation employees. The principal duties of this class are performed in a public building environment and outdoor environments that may include working evenings, weekends and in adverse weather conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Lead, coordinate, supervise assigned recreational activities, including but not limited to, youth and adult athletic leagues and events. Perform administrative duties including customer service, office, and clerical duties, develop and distribute program flyers. Set up and coordinate teams, sponsors, coaches, volunteer staff, game schedules, and related duties. Implements and enforces risk management and safety policies, regulations, and procedures at all events. Secures sponsorships, awards, supplies, and certificates as needed. Coordinates activities with other recreation coordinators, supervisors, and City departments, arranging resources and facility schedules. Ensure recreation play fields are maintained and properly prepared. Prepares and paints fields for recreation programs and events. Performs ball field maintenance including dragging and weed control. Supervises program, staff, volunteers, and participants including hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluations with the assistance of the director. Report or repair vandalism and other damage in city parks and facilities. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. Occasionally attend City Council Meetings and provide monthly program updates.

Planning, administration, organizational, scheduling, coordination and promotional techniques related to recreation activities. Rules and regulations for games, sports, and activities used in programs.

Assess community needs for recreation activities. Work independently with initiative and discretion, within established guidelines. Program promotional methods, techniques, and objectives. Follow written and oral instructions. Maintain facilities, equipment and materials are in good working order and safe conditions. Operate standard office equipment and a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties. Operate small equipment with regard to park or recreational settings. Operate a motor vehicle. Perform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set project priorities. Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and returning to and complete tasks in a timely manner. Communicate effectively to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, staff, other program providers, supervisors, community, and interest groups, elected and appointed officials, and other City employees. Acceptable Experience and Training High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Must be 18 years of age or older. Minimum of (2) two years' experience in recreation program planning and coordination, preferably with athletic programs, is preferred; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Special Qualifications A valid driver's license is required. First Aid and CPR certification is preferred. Experience in Microsoft Word, and Excel. Essential Physical Abilities Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern and dispense verbal instructions and communicate with others in person or by telephone. Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend and prepare written material and instructions and discern, supervise, and react to physical activities. Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate sports and office equipment, park equipment and operate a motor vehicle. Sufficient personal flexibility, agility, strength, physical reflexes, and stamina to supervise and participate in recreational and sports activities and work in an office and recreational environment and outside in inclement weather.
