A Recreation or Activities Worker leads tours and vacation trips in outdoor or wilderness areas. Leads hiking, rafting, canoeing, climbing or diving activities for a group. Provides specialized knowledge about the history, terrain, ecology or wildlife for the tour. Manages transportation, equipment and provisions and assists with cooking.
La Escuelita Learning Hub is a trauma-informed after-school and summer program of Beechmont Presbyterian Church done in partnership with the Ministerio Latino Presbiteriano de Preston Highway. La Escuelita works with immigrant students, 90% of whom are from Hispanic families and 10% from Sudanese families. The program assists students with homework, literacy, and learning English. Sports, games, and enrichment activities are provided as well as mental health services, snacks and meals. La Escuelita gives the students a safe place to be themselves in a setting where their cultural identity is embraced. The program is offered to immigrant students without regard to religious affiliation; religious activities are not included in the programing. La Escuelita Learning Hub has a vibrant parent program which includes mental health services and parenting classes, as well as case management for the students' families to connect them with social services.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The La Escuelita Literacy and Activity Assistant will be responsible for tutoring students in literacy and ESL, assisting with homework as well as leading/supervising activities including art and crafts, sports and games.
Literacy and Activity Assistant responsibilities:
Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students using curriculum and intervention resources provided by La Escuelita Learning Hub to assist students to improve their literacy skills; training will be provided. Work with La Escuelita staff to develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule for the literacy team to provide 15-20-minute reading sessions. Document students' participation and progress in the literacy program. Regularly review student data with the director to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention and strategize regarding student plans. Assist with homework as needed. Prepare a plan for engaging art and craft or other enrichment activities and lead these activities with the students; the director can provide guidance on ideas and resources for this programming. Organize the needed supplies and/or arrange for their purchase with the director Meet students at a bus stop three blocks from La Escuelita and walk with them to the program site as needed. Supervise or/and play games or board games with the students. Supervise students when playing in the gym. Assist in serving meals at La Escuelita's Dare to Care Kids Café, according to FDA protocols, when needed and providing daily supervision of the students as they eat in the small fellowship hall. Work with the students to keep assigned program areas (classrooms and art room) neat and tidy with special attention to recycling protocols. Communicate with other program staff/volunteers via walkie talkies when students leave their assigned program area (classrooms, art room, gym) and go to another program area. Work with the director to ensure security for the students by making sure that the door to the program facility is locked at all times and following all other team security protocols. Participate in field trips and help supervise the students. Assist in decorating and set up/take down for events. Assist Director in organization of monthly evening parent meetings and provision of activities for the students. Participate in weekly check-ins with the director. Attending monthly team meetings with other staff and volunteers which include training and opportunity for input into the program. Provide supervision as needed based on staffing, student, and program needs. Move between areas as needed to support student and program needs.

Required:
