Job Description

GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT - PARKS & RECREATION DIVISION SUMMER SEASONAL
The City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Department (DPRD) provides recreational, wellness, and leisure opportunities for residents and visitors throughout Metro Detroit. DPRD offers programs and activities for youth, adults, and seniors that promote health, wellness, community connection, and quality of life through parks, classes, events, concerts, and neighborhood programming. Under general supervision, serves as a seasonal employee for the City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Division by organizing and leading recreational activities at playgrounds, play centers, and recreation facilities, while supporting community engagement and youth programming.

OCCUPY THE SUMMER PROGRAM MANAGER
- $40 per hour Plans, develops, and coordinates comprehensive year-round recreation programs and activities for a municipal recreation center, ensuring engaging, organized, and inclusive programming that meets the recreational needs of the community. Utilizes experience in organizing and supervising recreational activities within a community recreation center setting, including overseeing daily operations, coordinating programs and events, and ensuring activities are conducted safely, effectively, and in accordance with established goals and standards.
RECREATION CENTER SUPERVISOR
- $23 per hour Plans, develops, and oversees comprehensive year-round recreation programs and activities for a municipal recreation center, including organizing social events, athletic leagues, children's activities, community programs, field days, and indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities while ensuring programs operate effectively and meet community needs. Supervises recreation, maintenance, and support staff by preparing work schedules, providing guidance and training, addressing employee concerns, coordinating daily operations, maintaining records and reports, managing equipment and supplies, safeguarding recreation center fees, consulting with community groups regarding facility use, and ensuring buildings and grounds are properly maintained and safe.
RECREATION PROGRAM COORDINATOR
- $19 per hour Assists with planning, promoting, and coordinating recreation center programs, activities, and community engagement efforts, including identifying sponsorship opportunities, organizing indoor and outdoor programs, directing play center activities, conducting exercise classes, facilitating free play, and supervising arts, crafts, sports, games, and special events for participants. Provides operational and staff support by supervising Playleaders, volunteers, seasonal employees, and service providers; monitoring participant safety and daily activities; preparing work activity reports; instructing and officiating recreational sports and activities; and assuming departmental leadership responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor.
OCCUPY THE SUMMER PROGRAM MANAGER
Bachelor's degree with specialization in physical education, recreation or a related field of study. Two years experience in conducting organized recreational activities. One year experience in supervising such activities at a community recreation center.
RECREATION CENTER SUPERVISOR
Bachelor's degree with specialization in physical education, recreation or a related field of study. Two years experience in conducting organized recreational activities. One year experience in supervising such activities at a community recreation center.
RECREATION PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, or sports and athletics. One year of professional recreation experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of rules and equipment for the more common group games. Knowledge of purposes and goals of organized recreation work. Knowledge of first aid methods. Skill in administering first aid. Skill in physical agility. Ability to organize, teach and lead groups in various forms of directed recreational activities. Ability to display understanding of and appropriate responses to childhood behavior. Ability to administer first aid. Ability to interact effectively with the public and children with tact and diplomacy. Ability to display initiative and resourcefulness in promoting interest in recreational activities.
Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal conditions. This is a Temporary Administrative Special Services (TASS) position. .
