55/hour Close Date Open Until Filled Yes Open Until Filled Notes Open For 2026-2027 Academic Year Position Type/Employee Class Student Position Instructor Status Not applicable Overtime Eligible Non-Exempt FLSA Status Campus Location Bend Primary Purpose The Fitness Attendant provides daily operational oversight of the Mazama Gymnasium and Fitness Center to ensure a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and community members. This position supports facility safety, customer service, policy enforcement, cleaning and sanitation, equipment operations, and emergency response in accordance with Central Oregon Community College policies and procedures. Fitness Attendants serve as visible representatives of COCC and are responsible for maintaining professional standards, supporting positive patron experiences, and acting decisively to protect the safety of facility users and staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Fitness Attendants are responsible for the following essential duties, which apply across all levels (1-4), with increased independence, leadership, and mentoring expected at higher levels: Proactively assess and mitigate safety, behavioral, and equipment risks through continuous observation, intervention, and documentation. Independently interpret and enforce facility policies, de‑escalate conflicts, address non‑compliance, and make real‑time decisions to protect patron safety and facility operations. Identify unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or facility hazards and take appropriate corrective action. Act as initial responder to medical, behavioral, and facility incidents; assess severity, initiate emergency protocols, coordinate with Campus Public Safety, and complete required documentation. Serve as the primary front‑line representative of the department, shaping patron experience, addressing complaints, and upholding institutional standards in a public-facing environment. Verify facility access credentials, including identification and Mazama stickers, as needed. Complete opening, closing, and shift‑based operational tasks using established checklists to maintain safety, cleanliness, and functionality. Maintain health, sanitation, and infection‑prevention standards through routine inspection, documentation, and corrective action aligned with institutional and public health guidelines. Manage towel and laundry operations, including collection, laundering, folding, and restocking. Support operational continuity by onboarding, mentoring, and monitoring newer staff, reinforcing standards and ensuring consistent service delivery across shifts. Check out and receive locker locks and sports equipment, maintaining accurate records and reporting equipment issues. Communicate clearly with supervisors and staff, complete required documentation, assist with training newer staff as appropriate, and perform related duties that support Mazama Fitness operations. Perform other related duties as assigned that support the safe and effective operation of the Mazama building. Department Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities All incumbents are expected to follow COCC policies & procedures and specific department guidelines. Ability to communicate clearly, calmly, and professionally with individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and fitness experience. Ability to enforce policies consistently while maintaining positive customer service. Ability to respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, and stressful situations. Knowledge of facility operations, equipment usage, and general fitness practices. Ability to follow detailed procedures and safety protocols. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates a positive, responsible, and service‑oriented demeanor. Ergonomic Requirements Working hours are typically Monday through Thursday 6:00am to 10:00pm and Friday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Work schedule may be assigned to other shift configurations based on business need of the facility. Position may be assigned to any shift, or day of week. Requires the ability to safely operate fitness equipment, walk, reach, bend, climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl at a moderate pace for short distances (equivalent to one mile in ten minutes or faster), crouch, and perform similar functions while patrolling campus and campus facilities. Position involves extended standing and walking, and some lifting weighing 10-50 pounds as well as the potential for rescue assistance of persons who may become injured. A computer is used less than 25 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Persons in this position may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Minimum Requirements Minimum Qualifications (All Levels) High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in fitness training, recreation, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CPR certification, or the ability to obtain CPR certification within 30 days of employment (American Red Cross, National Safety Council, or American Heart Association accepted). Fitness Attendant Levels Fitness Attendant 2: Minimum of two academic terms as Fitness Attendant 1 Increased experience corresponds with increased responsibility, independence, and leadership expectations. Previous experience working in a higher education environment. Previous experience working in a gym or fitness center. Previous experience working in a customer service setting.
