INTERNAL ONLY
: The City of Newport is seeking a motivated, customer-focused Fitness Coordinator to support patrons at the Recreation Center and help deliver high-quality fitness programs. This position plays a key role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for community members of all ages. About the Position The Fitness Coordinator provides daily customer service to patrons, maintains a clean and safe fitness environment, and instructs users on proper operation of cardio and strength equipment. This role also develops and delivers fitness classes, creates training materials, recruits and trains fitness instructors, and assists with department marketing through social media, publications, and community events. Essential Duties
  • Provide excellent customer service to Recreation Center patrons.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized fitness environment.
  • Instruct patrons on the proper use of cardio and strength training equipment.
  • Develop and implement fitness and health training materials, classes, and programs.
  • Recruit, train, and support fitness instructors.
  • Assist with marketing and outreach through social media, printed materials, and community events.
Example of Duties and/or Qualifications
MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and education would be a high school diploma or equivalency, AND 2 years relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE
: Knowledge of the principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies, equipment, basic rules, and skills involved in a variety of cardio and exercise programs. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various physical fitness and recreational activities. Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Knowledge of various teaching techniques.
SKILLS :
Skill in the use of strength training, cardiovascular machines, fitness equipment, standard office equipment, and parks and recreation equipment. Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills. Customer service orientation and skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, and strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.
ABILITIES
: Ability to recruit and train others. Ability to formulate and execute instructional classes. Ability to establish and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with city management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to become knowledgeable of city and department policies and procedures, share the information with clients, and enforc them as necessary. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions. The ability to work independently is critical. The ability to introduce new fitness trends using a variety of approaches. Ability to learn new techniques and trends in fitness and health areas, and pass them along to patrons through classes or one-on-one. Ability to stay current with the latest health information, and explain how the information may affect clients' exercise/health goals. Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid Oregon Driver's License at time of hire First Aid/CPR and AED certification within 30 days of hire Personal Trainer Certification within 3 months of hire
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Athletic Training, or Physical Therapy. Nationally-recognized personal training and group training certification that includes fitness assessment, and bio-mechanical and anatomy education. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift or move materials up to 100 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required 70% of the time to operate such equipment as computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and recreational equipment. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The position risks harm from physical hazards during manipulation of equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work location is primarily indoors where most work occurs in a recreational setting. The City of Newport offers free membership to the City's Recreation and Aquatic facility.
