Senior Camp Counselor (seasonal)
About Our Camp:
Camp Grosvenor is located in Saunderstown, RI, nestled closely along the Pettaquamscutt River. With over 100 acres of beautiful land, our camp is a vibrant and exciting summer camp that welcomes approximately 270 campers weekly. We offer a variety of activities, including a high and low ropes challenge course, helix climbing tower, archery, swimming, hiking and more!
Position Summary:
We are hiring multiple candidates for enthusiastic, attentive camp counselors to lead, support, and motivate campers as they enjoy all Camp Grosvenor has to offer. Camp counselors will help plan events, lead group events, monitor campers, respond to incidents such as behavioral problems or accidents, and contribute to Camper of the Week suggestions. To succeed as a camp counselor, you should be upbeat, decisive, responsible, organized, and possess strong leadership skills. Staff members are responsible for being positive role models at The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County Summer Camp. Staff are responsible but not limited to running Boys & Girls Clubs national, local and special programs. Summer camp hours range from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, starting June 30th and ending August 22nd . Additional dates required for pre-camp training. Please be available as early as June 21st . Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles related to development of youth between 5 and 12 years of age
  • Basic understanding of ACA standards
  • Report properly attired and on-time to work
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification required
  • Additional training will be provided post-hire
  • According to state law, the Boys & Girls Club must conduct a criminal records check by the Bureau of Criminal Identification of the Department of Attorney General of the State of Rhode Island
  • Lifeguard certification a plus Job Responsibilities Build a safe and engaging environment for your assigned group of campers Create and facilitate fun and exciting activities that align with your weekly program schedule Uphold all ACA standards for camp counselor Demonstrated ability to redirect inappropriate behaviors and provide effective behavior management strategies Utilize disciplinary reports when members' behaviors are in need of more than a verbal redirection Encourage and provide an opportunity for activities and programs that are current, fun, positive, structured, and meaningful Help provide a fun, safe, educational summer camp experience for members • Develop safe personal relationships between other staff and members Key Performance Metrics • Positive camper feedback on post-camp surveys.
Scoring a "3" or above on 80% on questions relating to the below key elements o Create a safe, positive, and supportive environment o Access to fun & sense of belonging o Foster supportive relationships & group dynamics o Provide meaningful opportunities and expectations o Formal and informal recognition
  • During program observations, senior counselors to score "2" or above (on a 0-3 rating system) on 75% of identified criteria on the "ACA Activity Leader Observation" form.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
  • Ability to: o Be on your feet for a majority of an 8-hour workday through walking, hiking, running, etc.
o Swim and/or assist campers while in the water o Carry up to 50lbs o React quickly and swiftly in case of emergency Terms of Employment Part-time hours based on availability with pay ranging from $15.00-$18.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications. Terms to be agreed upon hiring of candidate. For nearly 68 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County has provided quality programming and services not only to those less-advantaged children and their families but to all youth in our community. The Club is part of a nationwide movement of more than 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs, and we provide services to more than 1,800 members annually. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County offers a variety of programs for children, teens, adults and families. Programs include after school licensed child care, homework help, a teen center, summer camp, swimming lessons and aquatics, a fitness center, dance and drama, computers and technology, music and music production, and the fine arts.
