Summer Camp Counselor (Seasonal)

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Camp Director and in accordance with the association and policies of the Newport County YMCA, the Camp Counselor's main role is to assist in leading groups and providing fun and safe experiences for children. The Camp Counselor will help the campers acquire a feeling of high self esteem, self-worth, and competence in an outdoor setting. The Camp Counselor's will help his/her group, and it's members assert their interests and expand their ideas and knowledge. The Camp Counselor's will be responsible for the safety and well-being of each camper while in the day camp program. Camp CFP is located at the Newport County YMCA's secondary location in Portsmouth RI.

RI, 02871 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise and engage with campers in various activities, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Implement age-appropriate programs that promote learning through play, including sports, arts and crafts, theater, and outdoor adventures. Provide guidance and support to campers in developing social skills, teamwork, and self-confidence. Maintain a clean and organized environment while adhering to safety protocols. Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and fellow staff members to foster a positive camp community. Assist with first aid as needed and ensure the health and safety of all campers. Participate in training sessions to enhance skills in childcare, classroom management, and special education techniques. Assist in supervision of campers and all areas of program utilization. Assist in the development of appropriate lesson plans for campers that utilizes but is not limited to the following areas: nature, values, hiking, storytelling, games/activities, drama/skits, environmental awareness, arts and crafts, singing, multicultural activities, cooking, and youth sports/fitness programs. Promote hands-on activities, self-esteem, cultural diversity, and creative expression. Help establish a semi-structured setting with smooth transition periods while allowing for flexibility. Help campers adjust and grow respectfully toward other campers and camp life. Provide leadership and role modeling for other teens, staff, and children. Use corrective steps to help prevent and eliminate discipline problems. Maintain all YMCA standards, values, and rules. Be aware of all safety hazards. Implement first aid, CPR, or AED training if necessary. Be able to recognize symptoms of a concussion. Be sure to record all injuries. Ensure no distraction or interference with the delivery of camp activities (no reading, texting, talking on cell phone, or wearing headphones while on duty). Always be aware of the location of each camper. Ensure safety and cleanliness of the program area and equipment. Inform proper staff of equipment news including first aid. Maintain required current certifications. Assist with

camp safety duties. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. Provide excellent service to members and participants. Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 16 years of age. Must be available to work 40 hours per week. Excellent problem solving skills and communication skills. Must have the ability to act with professional discretion. Must have the ability to lead others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds. Must be able to move in a fast paced environment. Must be able to endure a loud environment occasionally.

Pay:

$16.00 - $17.00 per hour
