Job Description

General Manager - Italian Deli & Catering We are an established, high-volume Italian deli, prepared foods and catering business in Thornwood, NY seeking an experienced General Manager to take full responsibility for the day-to-day operation of our store. This is a hands-on management position. This is NOT an office management position. We are looking for someone who will be physically present and actively involved in the operation every day, working throughout both the front and back of the store, overseeing employees, interacting with customers, monitoring food quality and service, and making sure the entire operation runs properly. The owner is looking to step away from the day-to-day operation of the business. Therefore, we need a strong, dependable operator who can eventually run the store with minimal involvement from ownership. The right person will be expected to take ownership of the operation and treat the business as if it were their own.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Take full responsibility for the daily operation of the store Be actively present throughout the front counter, customer-service areas, kitchen, food-preparation areas and catering operation Work alongside and oversee employees throughout the day rather than managing from an office Interact directly with customers and ensure a high level of customer service Handle customer questions, special requests, complaints and problems professionally Oversee front-of-house and back-of-house employees Make sure employees are productive and properly performing their responsibilities Create weekly employee schedules and maintain appropriate staffing levels Hire, train, coach, discipline and manage employees Handle call-outs and staffing issues Maintain a professional and productive work environment Handle food, beverage, paper and supply ordering Manage vendors and supplier relationships Monitor inventory and maintain appropriate inventory levels Control food costs, labor costs, portioning and waste Maintain consistency in food quality, preparation, portions and presentation Oversee the deli counter, kitchen, prepared foods and catering departments Ensure catering orders are prepared correctly, completely and on time Maintain cleanliness, organization, food-safety and health-department standards Help develop specials, promotions and new menu ideas Assist with advertising, social media and local marketing Help grow catering and overall store sales Monitor daily and weekly sales and identify opportunities to improve profitability Identify problems and take the initiative to solve them without waiting for the owner Communicate regularly with ownership regarding sales, labor, food costs, staffing and significant operational issues
SCHEDULE & AVAILABILITY
Weekend and holiday availability is
REQUIRED.
Our weekends and holidays are important business days, and the General Manager must be available to work during these periods. Candidates should understand before applying that this is a full-time, hands-on food-service management position that requires a flexible schedule. This position requires being present when the business needs its General Manager—not simply Monday through Friday.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

EXPERIENCE
5+ years of food-service management experience preferred Previous General Manager, Store Manager, Restaurant Manager or Operations Manager experience strongly preferred Experience managing a high-volume food operation Experience hiring, training, scheduling and managing employees Experience with purchasing, ordering and inventory Understanding of food cost, labor cost and waste control Strong knowledge of food safety and sanitation Strong customer-service background Catering experience is a major plus Italian deli, gourmet market, prepared-food or specialty-food experience is a major plus Experience with advertising, promotions or social media is a plus
COMPENSATION
Base Salary:
$80,000-$95,000 per year, depending on experience In addition to base salary, we offer a performance-based bonus opportunity of up to $15,000 annually, providing the opportunity to earn $100,000+ per year. Performance bonuses will be based on measurable results including sales growth, catering growth, labor-cost control, food-cost and waste control, employee performance and retention, customer satisfaction and overall profitability.
THE PERSON WE WANT
We are specifically looking for someone who does not need the owner standing next to them to run the business. If an employee calls out, a customer has a problem, an order doesn't arrive, inventory is running low, labor is too high, food quality isn't right or something in the store needs attention, we expect our General Manager to recognize it, take ownership and solve it. At the same time, we want someone who enjoys being around people. You will be visible to our customers and employees every day. Building relationships with our regular customers and creating a welcoming environment are important parts of this position. Pay:
$80,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
