Job Description

Dog Care Manager Assistant Position Description:
The Dog Care Manager Assistant is a flexible position providing back-up as needed to support the Dog Care Manager. This will require interaction with staff, volunteers, veterinary offices, and members of the public. Primary responsibilities will be to ensure that all shelter procedures are followed, including the treatment and feeding plans for all dogs, cleanliness, health checks, as well as all safety protocols. This individual will also coordinate on and offsite veterinary care to the dogs, when required.
Position responsibilities and duties:
  • Provide assistance to volunteer shifts as needed with cleaning, feeding, providing water, medicating and maintaining the dog living spaces and other areas.
  • Check on the wellness of each dog daily, addressing any feeding, walking or health changes.
  • Maintain updated animal care schedule ("order of care")
  • Re-write/post feeding instruction cards to match appropriate feeding plans.
  • Maintain dog feed schedules
  • Administer medications and supplements as directed by the Dog Care Manager.
  • Manage regular dog health checks (daily, weekly, monthly) and maintain treatment records.
  • Assist the Dog Care Manager with taking phone calls from staff, volunteers, and the public, and responding in a timely manner.
  • Schedule veterinary visits as needed and arrange for the transport of dogs to the visit.
  • Discuss any medical decisions with the veterinarian and consult with the Dog Care Manager who will establish any treatment protocols to be followed.
  • Make decisions in dog care emergency when Dog Care Manager is unavailable, notify a Board member, and if necessary, take dog to vet or emergency animal hospital.
  • Handle intake of previously approved and evaluated owner surrenders.
  • Perform quality checks for food donations and repack as necessary to keep perishable food viable.
  • Submit maintenance requests to Facilities Manager, indicating priority items.
  • Complete administrative tasks
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Committed to The Sanctuary at Haafsville Mission, Vision and Values
  • Dog care and handling experience or vet tech experience
  • Good dog behavior and observation skills
  • Desire and ability to work around and with a variety of dogs of all ages and conditions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet weather and hot temperatures
  • Ability to administer medication as prescribed
  • Familiarity with disease control protocols
  • Ability to problem solve and assess situations that necessitate further assistance from Dog Care Manager and those that do not.
  • Ability to follow instructions and established procedures and meet time sensitive demands
  • Ability to learn and process new information quickly
  • Self-motivated team player with good communication and listening skills
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Keen interest in the animal welfare/rights movement is encouraged
Job Type:
  • Part-time - 30 hours/week (flexible); $15/hr.
  • Willing to work on weekends/holidays, varying shift times
Required:
    Animal Care:
    4 years; Veterinary Assistant, a plus
    • Valid driver's license and good driving record (subject to verification)
    • Ability to stand, bend, and lift (to 40-50 lbs.)
    • Ability to handle strong/large dogs
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

    • Dog Care Manager
    • If Dog Care Manager is unavailable, reports to the President of the Board of Directors.
