The Position The Cavern Foodservice Manager oversees the operations of Roanoke College's busiest retail operation, which offers quick service, convenience store, and late-night dining. The Cavern Manager also mentor's assistant managers and helps supervise and train staff to offer excellent guest experiences with our well-known customer service and great food in a fast-paced, lively environment. This recently renovated space features a stage, patio with fire pit, and enclosed space overlooking the MAQ and beautiful Kerr Stadium and serves as a popular hang-out space for students and the campus community. The Cavern is open August through May. This position begins on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Key Responsibilities :
Serves as a representative of Roanoke College, displaying courtesy, tact and respect in all interaction with our students, members of the RC community and with the public. Responsible for procurement of all food and supplies, ensure proper inventory rotation, and maintains facilities in good working order. Enforce regulations as set forth by Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority. Trains staff on the safe operation and cleaning of commercial cooking equipment. Follow and enforce policy and procedures as established by Dining Services. Provides shift coverage for opening and closing assistant managers as needed to accommodate leave requests and prevent significant overtime accrual. Conduct inventory, operates cash register, handles money, and ensures accurate financial bookkeeping/accounting procedures are met. Leads the hiring, training, and coaching of staff, including benefitted and non-benefitted supervisors, staff, and student workers. Responsible for ensuring accurate timecards are maintained and reported. Prepare and serve food and beverages to operation standards and in a safe and sanitary manner Complete training programming as directed to develop strong knowledge of operational and menu standards Maintain all equipment and facilities, conducting or directing the cleaning and preventative maintenance as required for peak operating performance and appearance. Complete regular product and equipment inventory Follows established effective purchasing and receiving policies and practices. Maintain up-to-date documents and reports to effectively manage the operation Write schedules to ensure adequate shift coverage. Working opening, closing, and "mid" management shifts in The Cavern.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities :
2+ years of foodservice or hospitality supervisory management experience is required. Preference given to candidates with an associate's degree (or higher) in Hospitality, Tourism, Business Management, or similar field. Previous experience in high-volume, fast-paced college and university dining is preferred. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, vendor online order systems, point-of-sale systems, timekeeping systems, recipe and inventory database management, and inventory management. Projects a positive, professional image. Maintains a high level of competence, good judgment, discretion, confidentiality, and sound decision-making skills. Ability to meticulously maintain a clean and safe food service environment
Special Conditions of Employment:
Satisfactory conviction history background check. Must be legally eligible to open, dispense, serve, and transport alcohol-containing beverages in the state of Virginia Maintain a valid VA driver's license, a clean DMV record and successful completion (and annual renewal) of required Roanoke College driver training programs. Must have current certification or be able to pass ServSafe Manager and Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) certification exams within 6 months of employment and renew as needed. Dining services staff are considered essential personnel. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension due to weather or other emergency conditions, this position is expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. Attend trade shows, conferences, and off-site training as required. Availability to work flexible hours, including early mornings or late nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to accommodate operational needs.
