Job Description
The 5&J Cafe has been an essential part of the Sturgeon Bay community since 2014. This independent Cafe is open year-round, serving Rusty Dog Coffee (Wisconsin), a variety of specialty teas, smoothies and an eclectic, made-to-order breakfast and lunch menu. We see a steady mix of locals and visitors to Door County, WI and we take great pride in being both a daily stop and a place people make a point to visit no matter the season. Our customers know us for our cheerful service, extensive breakfast & lunch menu, inviting atmosphere, and eclectic décor. The Café has been recognized as "The Best Coffee Shop in Wisconsin" by Buzzfeed and USA Today, and have also been voted "one of the top 10 places to eat in Wisconsin" by Yelp. We are seeking a full-time Café Manager that can hit the ground running, lead the daily operations and support a small, hardworking team. This is a hands-on role in a very busy, fast-paced environment with real responsibility requiring a steady presence on the floor. We are filling an immediate opening for a fast-learner, to be ready for a high volume season this summer. We are hoping to offer and make a decision by the end of May to the best candidate. Position details Full-time, hourly role (approximately 40 hours/week) Year-round position based in Sturgeon Bay, Door County Competitive pay based on experience and discussed during the interview proc Perks Free drinks and meals during shifts Additional employee discounts on food and merchandise Specific perks and details shared during the interview process What the Manager role looks like 40+ hours per week, including some weekends and some early mornings A hands-on role, actively working alongside the team Ongoing communication with the owner on operations and staffing Excellent customer service focus and communication skills Maintaining the highest quality of product and hospitality especially during very busy periods Participate in hiring and staffing decisions Responsible for scheduling, supervision, and training the team Core responsibilities Supervise daily Café operations, including opening readiness and overall customer flow Manage cash handling, deposits, and register procedures Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming space for guests Lead the team during service and step in where needed Ensure a strong, consistent customer experience from open to close Manage schedule, oversee inventory, oversee ordering, and storage organization Train and onboard new employees, ensuring all roles are covered within the first 30 days Reinforce café standards, health and safety guidelines, and daily checklist Team Leadership Set clear expectations for roles, attendance, and daily responsibilities• Lead by example in attitude, communication, work ethic, and customer service• Provide feedback, support staff development, and address issues as they arise Help cover shifts or scheduling gaps when needed to keep the café running smoothly What we're looking for Prior management or leadership experience Food Safety and SafeServe Certificate or ability to obtain within the first 30 days Ability to balance both customer and employee satisfaction with operational responsibilities Highly organized, with the ability to work steady under pressure, and hold self and others accountable to performance of the job responsibilities Strong communication and written skills including follow-through required Willingness to take ownership of the role and be part of the day-to-day prepping, cooking, espresso bar and team tasks.
