- Job Overview The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing restaurant operations during assigned shifts in the absence of the General Manager or Assistant Manager.
This role ensures food safety, guest service, employee supervision, and operational standards are maintained at all times. The Shift Supervisor serves as the on-duty leader and primary point of contact for employees, guests, and operational issues during the shift. Key ResponsibilitiesShift Leadership & Operations Act as the on-duty supervisor responsible for restaurant operations during assigned shifts. Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and brand standards. Monitor service flow, staffing levels, and operational needs throughout the shift. Address operational issues and escalate concerns to management as appropriate. Food Safety & Compliance Serve as the designated person in charge for food safety during the shift. Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations. Monitor food temperatures, holding times, cleanliness, and proper food handling practices. Take corrective action when food safety or sanitation standards are not met. Guest Service Support team members in delivering friendly, accurate, and timely service. Address guest questions, concerns, or complaints professionally and promptly. Ensure guest service standards are consistently followed. Team Supervision & Support Provide direction and guidance to team members during the shift. Assist with task assignments, break coverage, and workflow coordination. Reinforce company expectations related to performance, safety, and conduct. Model professionalism, teamwork, and positive leadership behaviors. Cash Handling & Security Support cash handling procedures, including drawer counts and shift change processes, as assigned. Ensure adherence to safety, security, and loss prevention procedures. Protect company assets and confidential information. Restaurant Operations & Cleaning Ensure dining areas, kitchen, restrooms, and service stations are clean and properly maintained. Assist with cleaning and operational tasks as needed. Perform and assign cleaning tasks including, but not limited to, clearing and sanitizing tables, sweeping and mopping floors, restocking service areas, removing trash, cleaning restrooms as assigned, and any other cleaning or side work tasks assigned by management . Physical Requirements & Work EnvironmentPhysical Activity Standing and walking for extended periods. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, and grasping. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects. Operating POS systems and restaurant equipment. Communicating with team members, guests, vendors, and management. Physical Requirements Standing and walking for the majority of the work shift.
Lifting and carrying ranges:
0-10 lbs: Frequent 11-25 lbs: Frequent 26-50 lbs: Occasional with assistance 51-75 lbs: Seldom; team-lift only Pushing and pulling approximately 10-40 lbs of force occasionally. Frequent use of hands for handling equipment, food items, and POS systems. Work Environment Work performed in restaurant dining and kitchen environments. Exposure to heat, noise, wet or slippery surfaces, cleaning chemicals, and food equipment. Variable schedules including days, nights, weekends, and holidays based on business needs. Cognitive Demands (ADA/FEHA-Compliant) Ability to maintain focus and awareness of restaurant operations. Ability to make timely decisions and address issues during the shift. Ability to follow and enforce food safety and operational procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally. Ability to manage normal workplace stress. Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance. Requirements Previous restaurant or customer service experience required; leadership experience preferred. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices required; food safety certification preferred or required per local regulations. Ability to lead and direct team members during a shift. Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
