Established in 1993, Joint Venture provides analysis and action on issues affecting the Silicon Valley economy and quality of life. The organization brings together established and emerging leaders—from business, government, academia, labor and the broader community—to spotlight issues, launch projects and work toward innovative solutions. About the Food Recovery Initiative Joint Venture's Food Recovery Initiative works to reduce surplus food by strengthening the local food recovery ecosystem - spurring funding and innovation; propagating food waste prevention and recovery strategies; and supporting government programs focused on the food sector. By convening the Food Recovery Council and managing the Santa Clara County Food Recovery Program, the initiative amplifies the efforts of food recovery organizations, local jurisdictions, and businesses in the fight against food waste. Our reports lay out recommendations to expand existing intervention strategies and to test new ones, built on a solid foundation of expertise, data, and analysis. We often follow our own recommendations, and start new projects and interventions to expand food recovery and prevent surplus food. Thanks to continued funding through the Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County, Joint Venture is managing the SB 1383 edible surplus food requirements for all jurisdictions in Santa Clara County. The Program is responsible for handling data collection on behalf of the jurisdictions; soliciting and managing reporting and conducting inspections; and providing education and outreach to all regulated entities. Responsibilities Serve as the face of the Santa Clara County Food Recovery Program, speaking publicly and ensuring the program is a leader across the state. Ensure jurisdiction compliance with SB 1383 Edible Food Recovery regulations. Manage and maintain the database of regulated businesses and food recovery organizations in Airtable. Use and manage extensions and automations for processes such as communicating with and collecting reporting from regulated entities, collecting and sending inspection reports, and sharing information with Santa Clara County jurisdictions. Supervise staff — including Senior Program Specialist and contractors as needed. Manage collection, analysis, and quality assurance of annual SB 1383 reporting from regulated entities. Prepare required annual reports and presentations. Occasionally conduct inspections of food recovery organizations or food businesses. Constantly work to improve database functionality and efficiency, and cohesion with on-the-ground efforts and Program objectives. Other projects change each fiscal year. Currently focused on expanding food recovery programs in affordable housing locations and expanding the use of reusable materials in food recovery. Future years will have different special projects.
