Smead Discovery Center Facilitator, Full-Time Job Summary:
The Smead Discovery Center is the Museum's hands-on learning center located on the lower level. It is an intergenerational space designed for visitors of all ages to explore natural history-based topics together at their own pace. The Facilitator supports daily operations of the Smead Discovery Center by maintaining a consistent presence at the Smead desk, welcoming and assisting visitors, monitoring the space, and facilitating hands-on learning experiences. This role focuses on front-line visitor engagement, program delivery, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment. Must have the ability to work Wednesday - Sunday, year-round. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Remain stationed at or near the Smead Discovery Center desk for extended periods, serving as the primary point of contact for visitors by greeting guests, answering questions, and providing general assistance. Monitor the Smead Discovery Center to ensure a safe, welcoming, and organized environment for visitors of all ages. Develop hands-on educational activities, programs, and signage for family audiences. Facilitate hands-on natural history and health-themed activities and programs for family audiences using interpretive techniques. Assist with daily operations, including visitor services, light cleaning, and restocking supplies. Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Smead Discovery Center throughout the day. Assist with opening and closing procedures as needed. Handle and care for live animals and plants, including reptiles, amphibians, insects, and spiders, following established guidelines. Report visitor feedback, concerns, or maintenance needs to the Smead Discovery Center Manager. Perform other duties as assigned.Physical Effort Required:
Position may require sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Some physical effort may occasionally be required. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. Must be able to respond to emergency situations.Education and Work Experience:
High school diploma orGED. 3-5
years of experience working with families and children preferred. Experience teaching or assisting in PreK to K preferred. Experience with natural science preferred.Other Qualifications:
A passion for science, nature, and conservation. Ability to work with an interdisciplinary professional team. Ability to communicate and work with an audience who is diverse in culture, age, race, and abilities in a pleasant, tactful, and enthusiastic manner. Adept at taking initiative, working without continuous supervision, and working as a team member. Willingness to learn new skills, problem solve, and critically evaluate your work. Pleasant demeanor, positive attitude, and must be comfortable interacting with staff and visitors. Flexibility and willingness to multi-task. Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment in anticipating problems before they arise. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Ability to be an outstanding ambassador of the Museum. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have high energy and enthusiasm necessary to work with families and young children. Experience using Adobe Photoshop or InDesign a plus.
