HR Reporting Structure:
The Part-Time Museum Employee reports directly to the Site Manager. The Site Manager reports to the Friends of the Our House Tavern Museum Board of Directors.
Position Summary:
The Our House Tavern Museum is seeking a dependable and professional Part-Time Museum Docent to assist with daily museum operations, visitor services, public engagement, event support, and general upkeep of the museum property during the open season. This position plays an important role in creating a welcoming and educational experience for visitors while supporting the overall operation and preservation of the museum. Duties may include conducting tours, assisting with public programs and rentals, operating the gift shop, maintaining museum cleanliness, and supporting general museum activities.
Visitor Services and Public Engagement:
Welcome and assist museum visitors in a professional and courteous manner Conduct or assist with guided tours for visitors, school groups, and organized groups Engage comfortably with the public and speak confidently to small crowds Provide accurate information about museum operations, exhibits, and events Operate the museum gift shop and handle visitor purchases Assist with public programs, special events, and rental activities
Facilities Safety and Collection Care:
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized museum environment Perform routine cleaning duties including sweeping, dusting, and general upkeep Follow museum procedures regarding the handling and protection of historic spaces and collections Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or collection concerns to the Site Manager Assist with event setup and breakdown, including tables, chairs, and related materials
General Duties:
Follow schedules, operational procedures, and instructions provided by museum leadership Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned Support museum operations as needed during tours, programs, and special events Maintain professionalism while representing the museum to visitors and the public Complete additional duties as assigned to support museum operations
Required Experience:
Customer service or other public-facing work experience preferred Comfortable interacting with visitors and speaking with groups Basic communication and organizational skills Ability to follow instructions and work independently Experience handling cash and basic sales transactions preferred Basic computer skills required Desired Skills and Experience Experience in museums, tourism, education, retail, hospitality, or public service (Not required) Public speaking or tour guide experience Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to adapt to changing operational and event needs Interest in local history, museums, or historic preservation Required Competencies Reliability and punctuality Professionalism and positive public interaction Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong communication and customer service abilities Flexibility and adaptability Attention to cleanliness, organization, and safety Work Environment The museum is a historic multi-level property consisting of three floors and an outdoor cellar area. Employees will regularly interact with visitors, school groups, volunteers, and event guests in both indoor and outdoor settings. This position may involve working during tours, public events, rental functions, and other museum activities that require flexibility in daily responsibilities. Physical Demands Ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Frequent stair use throughout the workday Ability to transport tables, chairs, and supplies between floors and outdoor areas Ability to perform cleaning and setup duties as needed Operating Season and Schedule The museum opens annually in May, Memorial Day Weekend and closes on Labor Day each year. After Labor Day, tours are available by appointment only.
Regular Public Hours Saturday:
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Sunday:
12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Other hours as needed Weekend availability is required. Work schedules may vary based on tours, rentals, museum programming, and special events. Off-season work is limited and based primarily on scheduled tours and events. Additional Requirements Successful completion of a background check and drug screening upon hiring. This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug screening in accordance with organizational policy and applicable law. This position is governed by the bylaws and policies of the Friends of the Our House Tavern Museum.

$11.00 per hour
