Provide case management and coordination in facilitating all functions and processes associated with disability retirement administration, including providing customer-focused retirement and long-term disability counseling, coordinating the transmission of benefit and medical information between participants, physicians, and other internal and external benefit organizations, and maintaining accurate and reliable decision support data, Provide case management for employees either applying for or appealing the termination of long-term disability benefits. Investigate and vet all existing and potential LTD cases, provide benefit recommendation actions to the Retirement Services Manager and Director, and address issues impacting eligibility or continuation of benefits. May include communication with multiple physicians, investigation of pre-existing conditions, and working with multiple diagnoses. Maintain effective contact with participants, medical and disability service providers, other GCPS departments, and state and federal benefits providers to ensure prompt receipt of all required information and resolution of issues. Coordinate and prepare all new case reviews for eligibility determination and monitor current cases for required reviews. Record and communicate eligibility and benefit decisions and ensure information is communicated to all affected individuals and organizations to ensure timely commencement, continuation, or termination of benefits. Continued (e.g. every 6 months) follow-up with all existing LTDs to ensure compliance with LTD plan requirements, to include coordination of vocational rehabilitation reviews and other third-party evaluations as needed. Evaluate LTD termination appeals through additional investigation with medical providers and other external resources. Qualification for LTD benefits is a complex coordination of events involving the transition from short-term disability (handled by HR Department) to long-term disability (handled by Retirement Department), requiring a working knowledge of medical conditions and their recovery periods to proactively assess and challenge physician recommendations. Facilitate the long-term disability benefit application process. Identify potentially eligible participants by coordinating with other GCPS departments involved in providing disability benefits, including the Risk Management and Benefits and Leave Administration Offices. Provide long-term disability applications, information and counseling to participants, including options available through other state and federal disability income benefit programs. Assist applicants through the application process by providing information and responses to participant questions orally and in writing. Maintain current status of all long-term disability benefit applications and initiate necessary actions to ensure all applications are received complete and timely for review. Provide support and counseling to participants regarding maintenance of other benefits including insurance and healthcare. This position is the sole point-of-contact for all aspects of the administration of GCPS' Long-Term Disability program. Maintain accurate and up-to-date long-term disability records and decision support information. Design, facilitate, create, and review reporting information to efficiently and effectively manage the LTD program within desired compliance parameters. Maintain automated and hardcopy records of all prospective, current, and historical long-term disability recipients and benefits. Ensure compliance with all records retention requirements and observe all legal and regulatory requirements for handling and disseminating sensitive medical and personal information. Monitor all long-term disability benefits for accuracy and document required changes to benefits based on Plan policy and prepare and process all approved benefit adjustments. LTD cases can involve private medical information, so adherence to federal privacy law in regards to storage and dissemination of this information is paramount. Maintain professional and technical proficiency. Maintain detailed knowledge of the GCPS long-term disability plan and how it interacts with other benefit plans. Assist others in understanding and interpreting the provisions of the Plan. Stay current on the utilization of technological tools and interact with and support other team members to facilitate more effective and efficient operations. Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to long-term disability services and processes. Person in this role must stay current with medical advances to adequately assess correlations between medical conditions and LTD recommendations to eliminate potential fraud. This ensures continuous improvement in both LTD analysis and processes.Physical Demands:
