Role Overview:
Plan Valuations Prepare and review annual pension plan valuations using actuarial valuation software, including collection and reconciliation of participant census data, asset information, and plan provisions Prepare matching valuations for takeover plans for enrolled actuary review Calculate actuarial assets, including discounted receivable contributions Prepare comprehensive valuation reports summarizing assumptions, methods, plan provisions, liabilities, costs, contribution ranges, and required disclosures Conduct peer reviews of valuations prepared by colleagues, providing guidance and ad-hoc training as needed Present contribution strategies and consult with clients on funding options in coordination with the supervising enrolled actuary Compliance & Regulatory Prepare and review plan documents for new plans, plan amendments, and plan termination amendments in compliance with ERISA, IRS, and DOL requirements Analyze takeover plan documents, extract pertinent information for setting up in our systems Perform nondiscrimination and cross-testing (401(a)(26), 401(a)(4), 410(b), and Top-Heavy) for clients with combined DB/DC arrangements Determine eligible participants, new entrants, terminated participants, and excluded employees in accordance with applicable plan provisions Participate in plan document restatement projects (e.g., PPA, Cycle 3) as required Plan Design & Consulting Prepare plan redesign studies and benefit projections in coordination with actuarial staff Conduct plan conversion studies (e.g., traditional DB to cash balance), including analysis of allocation credits, estimated cross-testing results, and required DC profit-sharing costs Advise clients on plan provision changes including benefit formula adjustments, early retirement provisions, eligibility requirements, and service or compensation definitions Consult on plan freezes, unfreezes, and termination feasibility, including guidance on potential surplus or deficiency treatment Perform self-employment income calculations for LLC and partnership clients, including education and ongoing consulting related to the Compensation Average definition Present multiple design scenarios to clients and assist with decision-making, supported by clear explanations of trade-offs, risks, and regulatory considerations Government Filings & Certifications Prepare Form 5500s, Schedule SBs, Annual Funding Notices, Summary Annual Reports, Form 8955s, and SSA Participant Statements for actuary review Prepare Section 101(j) Participant Notices and prefunding balance election forms Prepare PBGC Form-1 premium filings, including participant counts, flat-rate and variable-rate premiums, unfunded vested benefit calculations, and use of lookback and Standard vs. Alternative methods Ensure all filings comply with ERISA, IRS, and DOL requirements; implement revisions as directed by the supervising actuary Benefit Calculations, RMDs & Plan Terminations Prepare benefit election packages for terminated and retiring participants for actuary review Calculate cash balance account values, including interest and contribution credits through the benefit commencement date, and convert to accrued benefits per the plan's actuarial equivalence definition Identify participants due for Required Minimum Distributions, prepare RMD calculations, and prepare appropriate election forms for actuary review Conduct plan termination funding studies, prepare short plan year valuations and final Form 5500/Schedule SBs, and advise clients on surplus or deficiency management Risk Analysis & Forecasting Prepare benefit projections and forward-looking funding analyses using actuarial equivalence worksheets, comparing projected liabilities to estimated future asset values Perform scenario and stress testing by varying compensation rates, retirement age assumptions, and benefit formulas
Qualifications:
5+ years of direct, hands-on experience administering defined benefit pension plans (traditional and cash balance) in the small to medium size company space; open to individuals pursuing the actuarial track as well as those with a more administrative background Deep working knowledge of ERISA, IRS, and DOL laws and regulations governing qualified DB plans Demonstrated proficiency with pension valuation systems (e.g., ASC, FT William, or equivalent) Experience preparing or reviewing Form 5500, Schedule
SB, PBGC
filings, and related certifications Familiarity with PPA funding rules, including minimum required contributions, prefunding balances, AFTAP certifications, and quarterly contribution requirements Experience with nondiscrimination testing, including cross-testing for DB/DC combo plans Proficiency with Microsoft 365 products Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical results clearly to plan sponsors Bachelor's or associate degree with emphasis in math, business, or finance Demonstrated ability to mentor staff and lead compliance-related training Preferred Experience with FT William 5500 & document software and ASC valuation & compliance suite Why Join VFG Advisory LLC?:
