The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail oriented, analytical, and customer-focused Human Resources Generalist I to join our Human Resources team with a concentration in Classification and Compensation. The Human Resources Generalist I plays a key role in supporting the City's compensation strategy, job classification program, and workforce planning initiatives by conducting market research, analyzing compensation data, maintaining job classifications, and providing guidance to employees and managers on compensation and classification matters. The ideal Human Resources Generalist I candidate will possess strong analytical skills, experience interpreting and applying HR policies, and the ability to effectively communicate complex compensation concepts to a variety of audiences. Key Responsibilities Conduct compensation and labor market research to evaluate salary competitiveness and support compensation recommendations. Collect, analyze, and interpret compensation, classification, and workforce data to identify trends and support decision making. Participate in salary surveys and prepare reports, analyses, and recommendations based on survey findings. Assist with job classification reviews, position audits, and classification studies. Research, collect, organize, and analyze data to support classification and compensation recommendations. Develop, review, update, and maintain job descriptions to ensure accuracy and alignment with organizational needs. Coordinate classification and compensation changes with HRIS staff to ensure accurate system updates and records maintenance. Maintain classification and compensation records, databases, reports, and tracking logs. Serve as a resource for employees and managers regarding classification, compensation, employee relations, and related human resources policies and procedures. Design, develop, and facilitate training programs related to compensation, classification, and human resources topics. Prepare reports, presentations, and supporting documentation for compensation and classification initiatives. Support special projects, workforce planning initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts within Human Resources. Requirements Required Qualifications
EDUCATION
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in human resources, management, business or public administration, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this job class requires a minimum of four years of related, professional, full-time equivalent experience. Preferred Qualifications Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel formulas and functionality. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Skilled in analyzing and summarizing data in Excel for management review. Effective, clear, and persuasive oral and written communication; comfortable and skilled in presenting detailed information. Ability to evaluate and implement strategies for process improvement.
