Job Description

About This Position The Phoenix Fire Department is committed to providing the highest level of public safety services to our community. We protect lives and property through fire suppression, emergency medical and transportation services, disaster services, fire prevention, and public education. Our members will Prevent Harm, Survive and Be Nice! The Fire Prevention Specialist II position inspects properties for conformance with federal, state, county, and locally recognized laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. This position is responsible for performing advanced technical fire prevention, complex plan review, and inspection work that is of a diversified and complex nature. Duties include providing analysis and approval of plans, specifications, and construction documents for buildings, processes, operations, and fire protection systems and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards; and performing general inspections, new construction inspections, plan reviews, or other duties related to fire prevention codes, ordinances, regulations, or standards. This position works independently in the field and is responsible for decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Fire Prevention Specialists I are responsible for performing technical fire prevention, plan review, and inspection work of a diversified nature. Fire Prevention Specialists I are responsible for decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Fire Prevention Supervisor or Fire Protection Engineer.

SALARY Fire Prevention Specialist II Pay Range:
$30.92 to $47.95 per hour.
Hiring Range:
$30.92 to $43.49 per hour.
Fire Prevention Specialist I Pay Range:
$26.70 to $41.42 per hour.
Hiring Range:
$26.70 to $32.46 per hour.
Fire Prevention Trainee Pay Range:
$23.06 to $30.92 per hour.
Hiring Rate:
$23.06 to $28.04 per hour. Pay Range Explanation Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit. Minimum Qualifications Fire Prevention Specialist II Two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist I and ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification. OR Three years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity along with ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. The City job description can be found here. Fire Prevention Specialist I Completion of the Fire Prevention Specialist Trainee program, and an ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification. OR two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity, as well as ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification. Fire Prevention Trainee Three years of experience in public contact work. OR One year of public contact work experience related to code enforcement activities. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. ICC or NFPA Fire Inspector I or II Certification. Fire or life-safety system-related work experience. Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Fire Science or related degree. Completion of training programs or college classes related to Fire Prevention or Fire Sciences. Experience working in construction trades.
